AT44 Power Adjustment - long allen wrench?
«

Can anyone point me to a link for a 4mm allen wrench that you know is long enough to reach the preload adjustment on an AT-44 that's been modified to allow external access? I've followed Bob's instructions he posted for his .25, but I can't reach the adjustment from the outside. I don't have the resources to make a custom tool like he did. I ordered a long set on Amazon and the 4mm is only 6" long and it needs to be 7" per reports I've read.
Any help or suggestions is appreciated.
Chris

Hey Chris,
Most
long
Allen wrenches are 6"; however, many hardware stores should carry individual wrenches that are up to 7".
I paid $6 for one 4mm - 7" (T) style. I had to grind 1/2 of the (T) off so it would fit in and turn to adjust (as shown by rsterne).
If I had to do it all over again, I would go to more smaller hardware stores and buy the (L) style wrench where you don't need to do significant grinding to the handle part.
On mine, I also had to shorten a bit as you don't really need 7", but about 6.5". I further needed to grind the shaft of the wrench down (almost the whole length) to make it as small as possible because of the slight angle needed to get the thing in (it's not a straight shot).
So you will need a grinder to complete.
Kind of rambling.........hope this helps,
Kirk

Its a straight shot, you have to take the stock off to adjust the hammer spring because you have to place a small allen to hold the hammer while you adjust it. Have a chrono ready and adjust in 1/4 turns taking 20 shot groups looking for the lowest ES while writing down on paper the shot strings. keep a eye on the pressure and where it is when achieving the best string. Oh remember turning out is more (ccw) and turning in is less (cw)

Hey Baxter,
I think Chris's question assumed the stock didn't need to be taken off the gun per rsterne's (AT44 tuning) post. I don't need to take mine stock off, THE procedure also assumes you have drilled a 1/8" hole in the stock which allows you to insert a small allen wrench into the hammer (small hole in hammer) to hold while adjusting.

On my at44 PA, Harbor Freight has a set thats long enough. Also, cocking the gun reduces the length a little. Cant remember if the regular at44 is the same length. Item #69084 at harbor freight.

Correction. It does reach, just barely. I decided to try it before returning it, and the length listed my Bob is an over estimate. The extra long Allen wrench set by Bondhus sold on Amazon.com works.
