Title: Extreme Big Bore Air Rifles - My new aquisition.....WOW!!!
Post by: eagleone622 on December 06, 2012, 10:56:32 AM
Hey Guys...My name is Rich and I have been a member for a while now. I was ....in a former life...Lol, an online chat rep for Pyramyd Air but my Mom passed away on the 8th of October and
lets just say that things went down hill from there. Not with Pyramyd....with the chat room company....NEEDLE.  BUT ...I will not go any further than that. Lets just say it was a MUTUAL seperation!!! LOL

ANYWAY.....I will be posting results and a reveiw of the new Hunter Extreme .45 caliber PCP air rifle from EXTREME BIG BORE AIR RIFLES in Michigan. This is the most powerful big bore pcp I have tried to date.
I have 2 other big bore rifles...my Will Piatt tuned Sam Yang 909 Big Bore in .45 caliber and my Sam Yang Recluse in .357 caliber, ALSO a Will Piatt tuned rifle. Both of these rifles are powerful, accurate and are very well made for the money. The stock triggers are OK...but could use some improvement, which Will was kind enough to take care of when I sent him the rifles.
My 909 has about a 2.5 lb trigger pull ( very light ) and the Recluse is about 4 lbs..which is a good place to have it. Both rifles started out at around 10 pounds of pull so the trigger work that Will did was a GREAT improvement over the stock settings. I have always preferred a light trigger,  but at 4 lbs the Recluse trigger is fine.
Both of these Korean rifles are VERY ACCURATE! I practice at 50 and 100 yards and at 50 I can get almost hole in hole accuracy with a 2 shot group. When I go out to 100 yards I can hold about a 1" group and sometimes better if I really try. Shooting form really comes into play when you are trying to hit a ping pong ball at 100 yards....but I can do it. It just takes concentration and finesse.!!!
As for my preferred ammunition...I ONLY use hollowpoint projectiles from none other than Mr. Hollowpoint himself...Bob Vogul. I have tested many of Bob's designs and have found all to be accurate and well made.
I harvested my first deer this season with my 909 using Bob's 250 grain HP. It was a doe about 120 lbs. The shot was 60 yards and I hit her high in the shoulder through both lungs. She ran about 60 yards before expiring. That rifle shoots a 250 grain HP at 780 FPS. It did a great job of creating enough kinetic energy and damage to quickly and humanely harvest the deer.
I have not used the .357 RECLUSE as of yet to harvest a deer but I have no doubt that it can. It will shoot a 140 grain Hornady Flat Nose bullet at just about 1001 FPS. That equates to roughly
311 ft. lbs of kinetic energy. In comparison...the Benjamin Rogue was used by TEAM WILD in Africa to take a Red Heartebeest at 53 yards. Now after speaking with Chip at Crosman I found out that the Rogue is designed to use the air in the gun as efficiently as possible and to get as many full power shots as possible. Therefore...with a 145 grain Nosler Ballistic Tipped bullet they only get about 750 fps.
That is what it is designed for. Now...that animal was hit in the heart and went a very short distance and was done. The kinetic energy produced by the Rogue is roughly 181 ft lbs.
So if the Rogue can take a Red Heartebeest at only 181 ft lbs...then the Sam Yang Recluse at 311 ft lbs should be more than adequate for most deer sized game here in the United States.
NEXT POST..........ON TO THE EXTREME HUNTER .45 BIG BORE PCP !!!!!

Tag. I am looking forward to your review.

I just received a gun last week that Will Piatt had tuned and worked on the trigger. Not only is it powerful, the trigger is a pleasure to pull. Night and day compared to my stock Dragon Slayer. Now I'm waiting on another to be delivered.

Welcome to GTA. I do not want to be a rain cloud here and I do really welcome you to GTA . I have rifles tuned by Will and several other BB . I think that the Extrem hunter should be a top of the line rifle . And I believe Will is a good tuner . And I hope you have a chrony that you use at 10 feet away that can verify your energy levels . It has come to light here that Will has some sort of issue with some of his chrony readings in the past that match what you have stated . He has recently stated that his Recluse tunes are yielding around 220 fpe . I just had one tuned by him and the threads are all here for you to read . I also have emails from him that state that what he thought his tunes were yielding 300 fpe were really not reached in his mind . I would like some real world news about the Hunter and I have talked to Allan in the past myself . Marvin

OK Guys...I will be reviewing the Extreme Hunter very soon. As for the erroneous chrony results from Will... I chronographed my Recluse today and with the 115 Grain HP from Bob Vogul I am getting 975 fps.
That works out to 242.808 ft lbs of kinetic energy. So the numbers that Will had told me must be wrong and I would expect that with the 140 grain flat nose Hornady bullets I will be in the mid 800's.
Which is still a very good speed and energy for the Recluse. Will does a great job on the Sam Yangs. I think he may have been using a different bullet he was telling me about. I have earlier results that he told me about over the phone. The 68 grain Round Balls were producing 1109, 1077, 1021 fps for a 3 shot string.
I will say that the 140 grain Hornady Flat Nose Cowboy's are very accurate and I get 1/2" groups at 50 yards and 1" groups at 100 yards. I routinely break clay pigeon targets at 100 yards all day long. The gun is very accurate.

As for the Extreme Hunter...I am so IMPRESSED so far...this gun is EXCEPTIONALLY WELL MADE!! The gray/black laminated stock is absolutely flawless and the trigger ( which is a Timney Mauser Sportsman model ),
is awesome!! I have fired a few rounds through the gun and I can tell you...so far....this is the highest quality big bore air rifle I have ever seen. I will get into the review more in the next posts.
I will try to upload a photo for now..
Thanks,
Rich

The Recluse is plenty enough to take deer.I also have a will P tuned 909s and Recluse and so far this year I have taken a 6pt with the 909 (roughly 140lb).I also took 2 deer (a 5pt at 130lbs and a doe at 160 lb) with my recluse. The doe was about 45-50 yards with a 140 gr swc..complete pass threw even hiting shoulder.Pics are on the Hunting gate.Very quick recoverys.None went over 20 yards.

OK as for the 140 grain Cowboy's...I got them from Midway USA. Here is the link: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/640016/hornady-bullets-38-caliber-358-diameter-140-grain-lead-flat-nose-box-of-350 (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/640016/hornady-bullets-38-caliber-358-diameter-140-grain-lead-flat-nose-box-of-350)
As for photos of the rifle...I tied to upload the ones I took but the files were too large. I will take some others at lower resolution and post them soon.
I will be testing and shooting over the next few days and I will be posting my results once I have all the information together. I will be posting phots of the targets and at what distances they were shot at.
I will be shooting at 50 and 100 yards and aslo report on longer shots (about 150 yards or more if possible)  once I have a target set up at distance.

Hey Jeremy 1982...sounds like the Recluse does the trick. Are you using the 140 grain Cowboys? Sounds like that is what you were meaning.
I figured they would go through. They are made to penetrate I guess....lol
My doe went about 60 yards. She was hit high in the shoulders through both lungs with a 250 gr HP. It took a few seconds for the lungs to fill up I guess. But she had expired by the time I got to her.
Quick clean harvest. Just the way I want it. I never did recover the slug though. The deer was processed before I could get to the deer cooler and recover it.

Now with the Extreme Hunter.,...I should be able to drop them right in their tracks..LOL. NO DOUBT!!!
This rifle has INCREDIBLE POWER...close to 600 ft lbs at max fill pressure. Just in the few shots I have taken it is showing me the power and precision with which it is made. I am very impressed so far and I will be getting the review done soon so keep checking back. :D
The weather here in Georgia has been very warm and it has slowed the deer season dramatically. My buddy's deer cooler was really hoppin a few weeks back but now it has slowed down big time.
We are hoping for a cold snap to turn things back on and maybe a 2nd rut to come in. It would be nice since I know I have a good buck in the area. He has been making rubs but I have not seen him on any of my trail cameras. Hopefully I can get a chance at him. but we'll see.

The 140 gr. I shot the doe with was one I had made my self out of a Lee 140 gr swc mold but It is very similar to the hornady cowboy swags. These also are very accurate.Probably the best Ive shot from the gun yet.The 5 pt I shot was a hollow point I also made from a Lee 130 gr flat nose mold I had converted.Even with the hollow point though I got a complete pass threw at 53 yards. The Recluse is def. a suitable gun to take deer with though.I'm looking forward to seeing the results from the extreme .45 though.I have a Ranger XP .45 on order now that I'm hoping will be in before next year.I'm just hoping I don't fall in love with it and let my other air rifles sit on the shelf ;D ;D ;DTheir all great guns.

Eagleone, you had said you were shooting a 250 gr bullet out of your 909.....what kinda velocity's are you getting with them? The heaviest bullet I have is a 205 gr flat nose but I want to try some thing a lil heavier.Ive been using some 170 gr and 190 gr with great results...got a pass threw on a 140 lb deer plus they are some what flat shooting out to 60 yards but I'm trying to find some thing with little more punch.

I am using the Mr.Hollowpoint 250 grain HP's and getting 780 fps. I shot the doe at 60 yards at she went about 60 yards. It was a double lung shot. I hit her high in the left shoulder and it went through the lungs and into the opposite shoulder. If I had hit her lower ....right behind the shoulder, I probably would have had a complete pass through. The next deer I take I am going to try to place the shot in that spot, so I will let you know how I make out.
I am in the process of getting a Nitrogen gas set up for my guns in order to run the EXTREME HUNTER at the higher pressures and also so I can get a lot more fills. I will have a 6000 psi tank and it will be 300 cubic feet of Nitrogen so I should get quite a few more fills compared to my 4500 psi carbon fiber tank which is only 88 cu ft.. I will let you know what velocities I get and at the different pressures as well.

You might want to look in to a booster pump . About half of your 300 cf will still not be usable . I know several BB shooters have gone the nitrogen way and then added the pump due to the refill cost rate . Some have complained that with the fill rate used on the big tanks they are paying for 6000 psi but receiving 5700-5800 psi . GL .Marvin

Yea I was thinking about ordering a 220 gr Ruger old army conical mold to see how it performed but the highest gr. Ive shot so far is a 205 gr.I dont like the round nose much but Ive heard they are pretty accurate in the 909.What dia.is the Extreme?.452?

Title: Re: Extreme Big Bore Air Rifles - My new aquisition.....WOW!!!
Post by: eagleone622 on December 15, 2012, 10:25:34 PM
OK..guys so I have some FPS numbers and I have had a chance to shoot the Extrems Hunter .457 a bit. I am getting very good accuracy out of the rifle using the 250 and 280 grain HP's from Mr. Hollowpoint and I am shooting at 50 and 100 yards. I will post phots of the targets once I can compile all the information. As for the FPS performance I decided to try the 250 grain first and fill the gun to 3500 psi rather than go up to the full 4200 psi that Brent had said he uses. My results were as follows... first shot was 899.8 fps = (449.56 FPE),2nd shot ...857.3 fps = (422.78 FPE), and shot 3 was 785.4 fps = (342.51 FPE).

Now again...this was on a 3500 psi fill, not the higher 4200 psi. I was was interested in what the lower pressure would give me and at 900 fps...that is an AWESOME and powerful shot!! More than enough for ANY sized deer..thats for sure. I then tried the 280 grain HP's and the results for those are as follows. Still a 3500 psi fill. First shot was 875.2 fps =(476.35 FPE), 2nd shot ...800.2 fps = (398.20 FPE). The third shot my chronograph read error so I did not get the reading for the third, although I would expect it to be as much of a drop off as the 250 grain was.

I am awaiting the arival of my 6000 psi Nitrogen tank which will be delivered this week and I ordered a Nitrogen Tank Gauge assembly from Joe Brancato so that should be here Tuesday.Once I have that I will be able to run the higher pressure and see what I get with the 250 and 280 grain HP's repectively. I will also be posting some photos of the rifle and my chosen optic. I am using a Cablea's Alaskan Guide Series mil-dot scope right now. It is a 2.5 - 10X by 50mm scope. The Extreme Hunter comes with weaver mounts already installed so all you have to do is adjust your Weaver scope rings to match the spacing on the rifle and install your preferred optics. My rings are medium high rings and the scope has plenty of clearance. No issue there. One thing I did notice was that the breech where the bolt rides is not smooth and polished like I have seen on other rifles. When I questioned Bret on this he informed me that it is made that way for a reason and that all I had to do was use the RemOil on the O-Ring seal and on the bolt. It is getting better the more I shoot so I anticipate it will get smoother over time.
OK so I am going to sign off for now and will be posting photos and more test results in the next few days once I get the Nitrogen tank and get all the results.
STAY TUNED!!!!!!!!!!  8)

Hey Guys. Just wanted to give you all an update. I have not had a decent day to test the Extreme Hunter using the Nitrogen with the chronograph, but even though the weather has not cooperated at all and with the wind we have been having , my long range accuracy tests are providing me with the results I am looking for. I am getting lots of power with the Nitrogen though. I am running the rifle at 4000 psi with a 250 and a 280 grain HP and the accuracy results are excellent. I am able to keep a 1/2" group at 50 yards even with the wind and at 100 yards I am able to keep about a 1 1/2" group.....which is not too shabby at that range and with the windy conditions no less
.
One thing I will tell you is that in order to maintain accuracy with this rifle you will need to clean the bore about every 15-20 shots. I find that this really helps keep the accuracy where I want it. I do the same thing with my Sam Yang rifles and I get great results with those rifles too. I take a brass cleaning brush and wrap a patch around it and use Hoppes bore cleaning fluid. I run that up and down the bore 5-8 times and then run patches until they come out clean. That seems to really help in keeping the accuracy right on.
Over all so far I am very impressed with the Extreme Hunter .457 air rifle. It is a very powerful and accurate rifle and the more I shoot it the more I have confidence in the rifles effectiveness in taking large game at long distance as well as shorter ones. I would give Allen or Brent a call at Extreme Hunter Big Bore Air Rifles. They are great guys to deal with and if you had any issues I am sure they will take care of it right away. One of the great features of the rifle is the Timney Trigger. It is fully adjustable. I have adjusted mine to be very light pull...about 2 lbs. This is to my liking but not every one will want this. But it works for me. So if you are looking for an accurate, powerful and expertly made air rifle.....THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!
We are having another windy day here so until I can test the rifle in calm conditions I dont want to post any photos of the targets. I will tell you though I can break a clay pigeon at 100 yards almost every time, even in windy conditions from my bench rest. Freehand shooting,  I have taken out clay birds at 150 hards. Now,  I cant do that every time....but I can do it. Thats why I like a light trigger pull.
I will post some video to utube if I can soon. Its just with the crappy weather its hard to get good footage. But I will try soon.
You can get ahold of Brent and Allen here.... http://www.extremebigboreairrifles.com/ (http://www.extremebigboreairrifles.com/)

Youy can tell them that Rich K. from the forums sent you.

Hey Guys I also wanted to let you know I changed the scope on the gun. I recently was hunting with the rifle and it was an early morning hunt. I had 6 or 7 deer come out at about 100 yards and when I tried to center the crosshairs on one of them I found I could not see the crosshairs AT ALL!!! This was not good...to say the least. So I passed up taking any kind of a shot since I will not shoot unless I have a clear, well placed shot on any animal. I called Cabela's and decided to return the scope for a refund. It was a good scope. Clear and bright but the crosshairs are way to fine for low light conditions.

So I contacted Fred at USA OPTICS out of Alabama and asked him to send me a scope, the same model scope that I use on my new .243 centerfire rifle. This scope is a  Sightmark 3-9 x 42 mm Triple Duty Rifelscope.
It is not a mil-dot scope. It has a Circle Dot Duplex recticle that lights up either red or green. I love this recticle on the .243 so I thought why not try it on this rifle. It works great.
I have the rifle dialed in at 50 yards and I just hold over at 100 yards. I may try a mil dot scope in the future. I will decide on that later.

Rich, I was wondering if you have done any accuracy testing at the 3500 fill?  I noticed that you did some chrony testing at this pressure.  I don't have a high pressure tank yet but do have a 3500 psi scuba tank and hope my new .457 Extreme Hunter will drive tacks at that pressure.  So far I don't get very good groups at the lower fill pressure.  I know that Brent has designed these guns for 4200 but seems as though they should also be accurate at 3500 as well.
thanks

Hey Ray...
I have done some yes and I was using the 250 grain HP's at the 3500 psi.  At 50 yards the first two shots are just about touching each other, with the third shot dropping out a bit.
At 100 yards the grouping opens up a bit to about 1-1/2" but thats not bad for that distance. Plus I am still geeting used to the rifle and still playing a bit with the trigger.
I may even try to lighten it up more. Right now it is realy cold here in Georgia so I have not been shooting much. I am also waiting for some additional bullets from Bob since I have run out of the 250's and the 280 HP's.
They should be here tomorrow. Hope this helps.
Also If I were you...I would go with a Nitrogen tank set up. I was able to rent a 6000 psi tank that has about a 300 cu ft. capacity for $100.00 for the whole year. It cost's $75 to have it refilled. The fill guage and whip assembly from Joe Brancato at Airtanksforsale.com  is about $190.00 shipped and that is all you need to run the gun at either 3500 or 4200 psi. SO for about $365.00 you would have the high pressure source of air you need. Plus you should get ALOT of fills off of that tank. YOu just have to be careful when you are filling the gun. Opening the valve very slowly so as not to over fill the gun is very important. Its not hard ...you just need to be careful when dealing with these kind of fill pressures.
I fill my other pcp guns from it now too. And they are 3000 psi max fill. Just take your time when filling the guns.
Bob's hollowpoints ( www.mrhollowpoint.com ) are the best and most accurate bullets I have used. Give him a call for any of your ammo needs.
Thanks,
Rich

Eagleone...what size barrel do you have on your Extreme?I have been talking to brent the past few Days and I think I am going to buy one...just trying to figure out a few specs I want with it.I like the "34-"36 inch barrel but still want to keep it comfortable, thinking "32 maybe.

Jeremy, I have a 30"  in the Extreme and it's plenty long enough especially if you are going to carry it any distance.  FPS and FPE are not an issue with this gun.  They are simply powerful not matter how long your barrel.

Yea Brent had told me that most of what he was making is "27 inch barrels that the longer barrels are not getting much more fps...maybe 10-20 fps diff.what type of bullets are you using and what velocity's ?I take it that you would recommend this gun?I'm pretty set on getting one just curious as to what to expect out of it.

Ray

1.858 fps 4050 psi fill  458 fpe
2. 800 fps 3300
3. 756 fps 2700

Yea Ive spoke with brent a few times and he is really cool...not like other gun makers where they say "these are your option",Its been more of"what do you want your air rifle to be"?Im pretty set on getting one.one other question is "have you shot any light ammo?180 gr to 215 gr.?I plan on buying a 250gr-340gr. mold but right now I have a lot of .457 in the 150gr to 220 gr range for my 909s...figured if I took it turkey hunting a heavy round would be over kill.150-220 gr. prob. still is in this gun just curious.?

Jeremy, here's some stuff I shot today with lighter weight bullets

166 gr Hunter Supply
1. 958 fps 3500psi fill 338 fpe
2. 894 fps 2700psi
3. 843 fps 2200 psi

122 gr Mr Hollowpoint
1. 998 fps 3500 psi fill
2. 931 fps 2700 psi
3. 874 fps 2200 psi

Still lots of fpe to  do some damage.  I have not shot this gun enough to say that the barrel is broken in.  I am thinking that guys report that you need to shoot a several hundred rounds through the barrel to see a change in velocity.
Blessings, Ray

when I spoke to Brent he said I would get right at 600 fpe out of the gun with a "27 inch barrel...have you seen even close to that in yours with heavy rounds? Are you using the light hammer spring?Just wondering cause when I spoke to him I told him the #1 purpose of this gun was for deer hunting? You can take one easy with the fpe your getting,I have a tuned sam yang 909 thats getting 300fpe and took 2 this year with no prob.I was just looking for some thing that would put a real whooping on um ;D ;D ;D

Just for kicks I just shot a 350 gr bullet through the EXtreme but only had 3800 psi left in the tank and had the light spring in the gun.  It still shot 795 fps which calculates to be 491 fpe.  There's little doubt that you can hit the 600's in fpe with a heavier bullet with 4200+ psi fill.  Again saying that this gun has the horsepower you are looking for

Thats what I wanted to hear ;DI thought you were using the heavy spring maxed out getting low 400 fpe.If I get in the 500 fpe rang Ill be happy. Its a beautiful gun too.I saw pics you posted on net54.Thank you,you just made my day ;D

Does the gun have much recoil? Meaning enough that could effect accuracy if not held correctly?

Don't have enough experience yet to determine if the hold is critical.  Rich may be able to offer his experience.  I do know that she has some decent recoil especially when filled to 4200 psi

Did a lot of searching and ended up  buying this whole rig for $565 delivered.  Holds 4350psi and 106cu ft.  You can buy the gage and 5 foot hose assembly separately for $120 if you don't need a tank.  It is a DIN connection.  Tank is about 2 times the weight of a carbon fiber but stands vertically and is rugged.   Basically an aluminum scuba tank with an outer wrap.   I did put a $8 mesh boot over the tank as a bad ding in the outer wrap is not a good thing.  I suspect that a bad ding in a carbon fiber tank is not a good thing either.  The valve is not the controlled fill type as often advertised but it's not really  a problem to throttle the fill rate.

Wow,never even seen that sight before.Thats a pretty good deal.PA wants $699 for the 80 cf airhog and this is bigger.I think Im gonna invest in a shoebox too cause a lot of the local shops cant fill these sort of tanks. The shop up the road says they can take any tank to 4500psibut people have said it usually ends up around 4100-4250 with smaller tanks.Thank you

Would love a shoebox but to get the really good one it's now $1100.  Ouch.!  Fortunately I have 2 scuba shops not far away her it Grand Rapids who will fill my tank for 7 bucks.  they overfill about 200psi to allow for cool down

I bought the $650 4500 psi upgraded model a few months ago (upgrades being hardened pistons, belt drive, and fan). I have been very satisfied with it and don't regret not wiating for the Freedom to come out.

Ive heard good things about the "Freedom" but Ive also heard the model your talking about being very durable/well built. The "freedom" is supp to be faster but Im in no hurry.I plan on using it with the .457 Extreme which will be a hunting rifle and not target so once I get it sighted in it wont get shot much until deer season or to make sure its holding zero.Sounds like a winner to me ;D

I bought a used older model shoebox 4500 and just upgraded the pistons myself, to the hardened ones. I have been very happy with mine and they are easy to work on.

You do need a lot of air for BB's ... My Dragon Claw is hungry.

With that being said, I would love to try out on of these Extreme's in .308

Just a quick note guys... My Extreme 457 is giving me incredible accuracy. I am shooting Mr.Hollowpoint 215 grain .457 HP's out of the Extreme at 3500 psi and I am hitting
60 mm clay targets at 100 yards. That is a target the size of an Oreo cookie at that distance. I still have to do some chrono testing to see what the energy is for this pressure and grain weight,
but I am sure that it is at least in the high 800's to 900 fps range. maybe more.I will post a video on youtube soon showing this accuracy once we get some warmer weather.
It has been pretty cold here in Georgia. That's it for now.

Yes I am shooting the rifle as it was shipped to me. The only addition has been a titanium air tube. Everything else is stock.
