FD PCP arrived

Well my FD PCP arrived on Thursday, I un-boxed it, nicely packed double boxed, did a quick once over, wood looks much nicer than expected, all metal finishes were nice and even. Good looking rifle, more than expected at this price point, kudos to Mike. So I took it out back without even checking the current fill pressure, and using the factory open sights fired 4- 5 shots at some steel plates ranging from 35 - 50 yards out. Was rewarded with ringing steel on every plate, they measure about 4X6" so not a big challenge, just fun things for the kids to get their feet wet with. (I'm a 4-H rifle and pistol instructor) Filled the gun to the recommended 1500 PSI, and shot my first string over the Chrony, got 20 shots before stopping, that started at 598.5, peaked at 785.6, ended at 759.6 with an ending pressure of 850 PSI. This was with 22 caliber JSB 18.1's, so I know where I'm at, and the tuning can begin. First things first, the trigger, opened up the rifle, got into the trigger, polished the trigger and sear, clipped two coils off the weight adjustment spring, fought my way through getting the sear spring back in, finally found a picture on-line, and sorted it out. I should have taken a couple of pics my self, so no one to blame but me on that. Anyway, next adjusted the sear engagement to about 1/16" engagement to get rid of the long pull, which was as expected a bit gritty. Once I got the trigger back together turned the Power Adjuster in a couple of turns hoping to get the first few shots up closer to where I was shooting for. My game plan was based on Bob's (Rsterne's) tuning write up for a 20 shot string at 20 FPE with as low an SD as I could squeeze out. Well the second string started at 550.5, second shot jumped to 631, took until shot 4 before I was in the 670's, that string averaged 723.4 but had an SD of 60, for an average FPE of 21. So now to work on the string, and find that sweet spot I was looking for. Re-filled the gun to 1500 PSI again, adjusted the PA two turns out from flush, and had to add an additional 1/4 turn to get the gun to cock. Started shooting again, and when I hit 678.6 stopped and checked the fill pressure, it was sitting at 1300 PSI, so now I have my starting pressure. I generally use this approach after learning from my Talon that not every great string needs the full fill pressure. So moving along, after filled to 1350 PSI fill, I then proceeded to shoot 20 shots over the Chrony, and got a pretty nice string, started at 662, peaked at 801, and ended at 687, so I got my 20 shots at 22 FPE with an ending pressure of 700 PSI. Lowering the fill pressure again to the 1300 PSI sweet spot gives an even flatter string, but I picked up a handful of #113 o-rings, and plan to drop three in front of the hammer, slightly move the trigger forward, so I can get a little more hammer spring, then I'll update my post again. But at this point, I'm really happy with 20 shots at 22 FPE, so if I can just tighten up the spread a bit more, this is already a great deal, and a rocking hunter. During the Chrony work, it put 50+ shots into about a 1/2" hole at 26 yards. 26 yards just happens to be where my mid range target post sits, I have another at 43 yards, and a 10M target stand for the precision target guns. Anyway so far I'm very happy with this rifle, and even happier I managed to get one before they sold out.
Well that's it for now, more to come,
Casey

Casey, glad to hear another happy FDAR PCP owner. It has become my favorite over the last few weeks. I have a question for you, what does the three o-rings do?

Geat stuff Casey, and I got one of them also. Love it and is extremely accurate out of the box. I cant wait to start tinkering with mine as well. Good luck and thanks for the post and info.

Bill, yes as Mike stated, they go in front of the striker, and basiclly act like a poor mans regulator / de-bounce device. Basically once you get the hammer spring set high enough, and get your string pretty close, you drop them in to try and flatten your string more, and reduce the spread. Seems to help get the string flatter, and slows down the hammer dampening the hit especially at lower pressures. Going to at least give it a try, working on the bark right now, kicking my butt. I really need to pick up a mini lathe, and get some time on it. Gene, thanks, and mine seems to be quite accurate too. I actually watched it start to throw a few, and had to stop and run a few patches through it. I must have thrown a few hundred rounds, wasn't counting, just working with the JSB 18.1, then some 15.9's, they are only about half a mil dot high, and seem to stay centered. Didn't even bother to get the Chrony, as I was just plain having fun punching paper, and smacking steel spinners. Heck the spinner are sitting at 40 yards, so the little one requires concentration, but the larger ones are point and shoot. I'll update again once I drop in the Bstaley o-ring mod and see if my shot string does smooth out. That would be the cats meow, since I already had it getting 20 shots, but it would rock to flatten it a bit more.

Sorry I haven't updated my thread in a while, anyway, didn't get to the o-ring mod yet, but have tried some H&N 21.1 gr pellets, and the CPHP's. Both of these and the JSB 18.1's all shoot nice tight groups from 26- 42 yards. I haven't setup a 50 yard target yet, I know been slacking, but it's so much fun just shooting this rifle. I love my hot rodded Air Force Talon SS, but being able to refill this rifle with no more than 24-26 pump strokes with a Benji pump, and not hurting my bad back has just made this my fun plinker. So far haven't had a clean shot at any tree rats, or crows, but their time will come! Anyway, since we have a nice long holiday weekend, I will try to get the o-ring mod done, and play with the tuning a bit more. So far with the 18.1's I was able to get a pretty nice string, so I think just a bit more tinkering, and it will be ready to go. I'll post up some pics too, so look for the next update in the next few days. By the way Mike, thanks for a great little rifle, that has brought me a great deal of pleasure to not only have, bu to also tinker with.
Casey
P.S. CW Longshot I actually ended up using between 1250-1350 PSI fills and still manage a good 20 shot string, mine would not pop the valve at 1500. Mike sent me a note on how to adress that, so hopefully this weekends tuning and modding will resolve that if I even want to.
P.S.S. I couldn't stand it, and ordered another one in 177, I going to try for at least a nice 30+ shot string, maybe at 12-15 FPE.

Welcome to the addiction!
I started with the .22 and ordered a.177 within a week. Just had to have a set.
I finally got my crony and ran a string from each across it.
The .22 from 1400 psi fill, 14.3gr CPHPs
720.4
779.2
710.9
814.6
813.9
777.3
799.4
806.7
775.0
840.6
839.7
783.0
832.0
806.1
817.9
808.7
788.1
773.1
774.1
753
732
721
The .177 1400 psi fill and 7.9gr CPHP
Started with a bang at 950.6 fps and dropped 8-10 fps every shot from there.
Both are box stock on tuning the hammer strike, but have the .177 degassed to install a depinger. Found the air tube was fairly dirty so waiting for time to completely dismantle and clean the rifle. Once that is done I will work on evening out the shot strings on both.

Well in my quest to get the valve to open at the 1500 PSI fill, I added a 1/4" spacer inside the back of the hammer, and dropped three o-rings in front of the hammer. It will now pop the valve at 1500 PSI, but it looks like I now have some more work to flatten the string out more. The gun now averages 748 across 20 shots with CPHP's for a SD of 19.5 making 17.7 Ft.Lbs. I may actually go back to the previous tune by removing the spring spacer, and o-rings, as that tune only required a 1350 PSI fill and averaged the same 748 for 20 shots with JSB 18.1's for 22.5 Ft.Lbs. Both tunes end at approximately 800 PSI, so it looks like the first one may be the better of the two. More to come as I continue to play with the rifle. Time to pick up some more JSB's as they also seem to be more consistent, and tend to group just a bit tighter at both 26, and 42 yards.

Just received my 177 XS60 a couple of days ago. Seems I have a leak right around the fill adapter. I haven't had a chance to check if it's the check valve, or maybe the o-ring. Mike any pointers where to check first? If I fill it, then listen right at the fill cap, I can hear a quiet hiss. Maybe a bit of dirt in the check valve? I held my finger in the fill nipple, and it didn't seem to push any air back against my finger, thus why I was thinking maybe the o-ring maybe got a rough spot??? I'll get the soapy water out as soon as I can, since I really want to get this one up and running. Already mounter the scope before I even started the testing, filled it up first shot was just over the 930 FPS mark, so it's going to be a fun shooter, just need to run down the leak. The 22 is still rocking, haven't had a cahnce to un-do the last tune, as the prior one had a better shot string, for a full 20 shots at 22 Ft.Lbs, and the latest tune still gives 20 shots, but at 17.5Ft.Lbs. I guess the hammer spring may be a little shorter in that gun, as it did not have enough to pop the valve at 1500 PSI above about 350 FPS, after I added a spacer in the hammer to give more adjustment to the hammer spring, it will pop at 1500, but the prior tune only required 1350 PSI to give that nice 20 shot string with more power.

slip a condom over the end of the tube and hold it in place with a rubber band, if it swells up then it could be the o-ring, if the cap pops off the nipple then it's the seal in the check valve. Many times all you need to do for check valve is flip the seal over or clean a spec of stuff off the sealing surface...

soapy water will find a seal leak at the nipple also if the seal for the nipple is bad or needs cleaning

Did the tests, ended up pulling the fill adapter, and found a small cut in the o-ring. Can I buy one or two o-rings, since the local stores don't seem to have the exact size and type? I sent an email, but remembered you were having issues, so I tried to PM you, but the system wouldn't let me PM you?
I sent my address in the email, just let me know what the cost is, and I will square it up with you.
Thanks again for building these great little rifles, when I did fill it, it looks like it's going to be one heck of a shooter, just can't tune it yet. Not griping, for the price, one expects little things to come up here and there, but the level of support and service you have provided has been outstanding.
Thanks again Mike,

OK, back to the 22 FD-PCP. I ended up puling the spacer as I reported before, the rifle now again averages 20 shots at 22 FPE, the average velocity with JSB 18.1's is 741.7 FPS. Here's a quick graph, much better than when I forced it to use the 1500 PSI fill with more spring tension. Plus the 1350 - 1400 PSI fill is real easy on the back.
