Title: 1322 for the Trapline
Post by: Berky on August 01, 2012, 10:52:43 PM
I was thinking about getting the 1322 for up close kills on the trapline. Will this pistol kill a fox, raccoon, etc with a 3-5ft head shot? Are there many modifacations to increase power of this weapon?

If you but an flat top piston, with a flow through bolt, and a Benjamin discovery hammer spring on the 1322, you should get near 15 ft-lbs energy with 20 pumps. That would be fine for coons and smaller foxes, but for larger foxes, you best use a rimfire or even your .25 XL.

So is there pistol out there that will do the job at a reasonable price? How much are the mods you suggested?

about $120 for the 1322 and mods you could probably get a cheap springer for close to that

1377x is right, depending on how far you want to take it.

To add the FT Piston and Valve and the Long Probe Bolt from Mellon Air it will cost you $44 (parts plus $2 shipping), the gun will cost you around $65 (airgun plus shipping) and if you put a longer barrel on it (like a 14.6" barrel which will add some FPS) it will cost about $15 shipped from Crosman, plus a sight at the end to protect the barrel and a barrel band to allow for the longer barrel to mount properly for around $10. You'll also want the .22 caliber Steel Breech kit from Crosman which will run about $35 Shipped. So you are looking at around $170 minimum to build a pistol that will shoot at around 585FPS shooting 14.3 grain CPHPs with 15 pumps or around 600FPS plus at 20 pumps.

How do I know that? I just built a 1322 Carbine for my daughter and with adding the 1399 Skeleton Stock from Crosman it cost me over $190 to build a hard hitting little carbine. The bad thing was that I didn't want to pump it up all the time to teach her to shoot, so it only had around 100 to 150 shots through it :( . Anyway, I just recently put it up for sale in the Classifieds here at the GTA if you want to check it out.

However, like joe k mentioned, you will want to check your local regulations to make sure it will be lawful to use it for your intended purpose. ;)

My BIL runs traps, I showed him my stock 1322, he thinks he could use it on his trap line as is.  He mostly traps coon, fox and coyote.  He likes the lack of shot noise, if you trap, you understand...

I must say for coon, I would not take less than 15 ftlbs at the muzzle........

Here is the way I would go.........

Get a 2240.
Put a steel breech and a 12 inch bbl on it
Do some work to the trigger components, if the group assembly is less than a 2400 pistol, these ALL need work. I dont care what it is, Benjamin, Crosman,13xx, 22XX, HBxx, they ALL need some smoothing out.
Go get a hipac tube.
Put the green spring in.
Fill to 1500-1800.
Run it stock OR open the valve up some.
Shoot kodiaks or the 25 cal JSBs.
Gun should put out 15 ft lbs at the muzzle, and wont be down very much to 15 yds (safe "skunk distance") Will have the accuracy to boot.
No pumping between misplaced shots.
Should get 15-20 shots or more.
IF you buy a hot valve, you should have around 60 in the gun, 50 in the hipack, and 30 in the valve.  Steel breech ?  I dont remember what they cost.
Pump will run you 120-300.
No need for a scope at that distance.

that reservior should be easy to charge with a handpump to 1500.

God bless,

Farmer

The only problem with a CO2, is most people trap in the cold winter, and CO2 shoots slower, and uses up faster in the cold.

Sorry, wasn't clear.....

Hipac running on HPA/pcp mode only.  HPA and airgun internals in general will move slower in weather below freezing, but you just compensate by leaving your gun where it is cool, and filling at the same temps you will be working in.

Fill to 1600-1700 at 30 degrees in the am, and hopefully you wont pass 2k when its 48 degreees by lunchtime.   Get a good spring setup.

Vines had built a 15 ftlb pcp HIpac 2240 setup, and I was real impressed with it.

Can c02 even be filled to 1500-1800psi?

Sorry to be confusing, its part of redneck lingo to be hard to understand.

God bless,

Farmer
