Need advice on protecting bare steel
jfrey:
I'm polishing a muzzle break down to the bare steel. I like the way it looks with a mirror finish. This gun won't be outdoors much except to plink in the back yard. Am I creating a maintenance nightmare or is there something I can treat the steel with to protect is as much as regular blued gun steel? Thanks in advance for tips and advice.
Motorhead:
Kal-Gard gun coat is one such coating ....
AmBraCol:
The best anti-corrosive I've ever used is good old ATF (automatic transmission fluid), especially when thickened up with some anhydrous lanolin. Just wipe down before putting away and make sure that nothing breaks the film (be careful how you set it in the rack).
Novagun:
I have made my own muzzle breaks out of mild steel and polished them. All I use is 3 in one oil and wipe it down just the same as the rest of the rifle. No rust in years.
I do the same with my small muzzle loading cannon. No rust. The bore of the cannon is a different story but who cares.

Don't worry I got a PB 1911 I polished with Autosol. I just used whatever ATF, 3 in 1 to protect it. In 2 years, shooting in rain, snow etc, I might had a little speck of discoloration.
