Refinished stock for the Benjamin Trail NP

When I first got the gun, I thought I might improve the finish by adding a few coats of varnish. I figured I would be handling it quite a bit in the beginning, so an extra coat or two wouldn't hurt.
Much to my surprise, the varnish in the store had been there for quite some time, and some of the "driers" had escaped!
It took 3 days for the gun to dry to where I could touch it and not leave a mark. But keeping the hand in one spot (like when you aim) for a minute, made it feel "sticky". A couple of weeks later I noticed it had a "dirty" look in the areas where my paws had handled it quite a bit. The varnish had even wrinkled a bit in those places. Consternation!
So after my tuning, I again separated the stock and started wet-sanding it. Proceeding carefully, so as not remove the stain, I managed to get most of the faulty varnish off. However, I noticed I had sanded too deep in some spots, but I almost liked the two-tone effect- though not so spotty. Making a plan of which parts were to remain original and which would be sanded light, I went at it with a small random orbit machine. Aluminum (metal) A/C duct tape kept me from accidentally sanding the perfling. That was to stay dark anyway.
When complete, I found the contrast too great, so I brought it down a tad by adding a lighter version of the existing stain to the "bright" areas. When done to my satisfaction, I used my old friend "Deft" satin lacquer to seal the project. First a light coat, to make sure there was no lifting of the old finish, then two heavier coats.
Deft dries to the touch in a very short time. 24 hours later I put everything back together. I like the effect. How about you guys?

I like it. How did you sand around the checkering without damaging it?

Thanks guys.
To sand around the checkering, I taped a piece of the flexible aluminum metal duct tape over it. Since it is aluminum, rubbing a fingernail over it allows the pattern and edges to show through. Then I used a razor knife to cut around the checkered part and pulled off the waste, leaving aluminized checkering. Then I could sand around the area (still, somewhat carefully to not go through the aluminum).
When completely sanded, I pulled off the aluminum and gave the checkering a very light steel wool-ing (0000 grade) to dull the finish and prepare it for the lacquer. I also used the steel wool lightly between coats to take off nubbies and improve adhesion. The tack cloth always followed, of course.
On the utilitarian side, I managed to remove another pest from the bird feeder this morning. Quick and clean.

Thanks, for telling me you to work around the checkering. My XL1000 stock finish is starting to come off. I have been thinking about trying a refinish on the stock, I like the way yours turned out.

Nice work. Definite improvement on the original. And some interesting refinishing tips.

That looks really nice. I like the weaver scope rail, hope the other spring gun manufacturer take notice! "hint"?
