Title: NEW POLL!!! Best Overall - .22 Hunting Pellets?
Post by: HeadOfPoland on November 19, 2012, 09:38:29 AM
Like I said I ordered all 4 yesterday from Pyramid Air plus am going to pick up some more CPHPs later today. So far out of all the pellets I've tried (none of which besides the CPHPs are listed) my Rem Summit loves the CPHPs naturally. Can't get solid groups other wise... Let me know out of these what you think is gunna be the most successful and I'll update with results after I get the tins!

Depends on the range my man. My gun shoot very well with crow mags to 25yds one holers!! Btw the Eun Jin's 32.4's are really heavy for a springer/Np  in any power range I ve seen off the shelf :o. Hope your scope has alot of Mil Dots you'll need them

I don't know about all of your choices, they seem pretty heavy, IMO, for that spring/gun.  No CP domes?  If it likes CPHPs, I would sure have some CP domes coming in as well.
You didn't mention range and what quarry you based it all on.

If it likes the 14.3 gn food.  Keep feeding it.  :)  But you will have fun testing.  They will all kill a nutter if you can hit it, so it still comes down to which pellet still has energy at your preferred range and groups best.

Have fun!!

If you are like me, your local Waqlly World does not stock the .22 CP domes, only the HPs.

I love the idea of a really heavy pellet... but will something too heavy damage the gun at all?

Heck Yeah.  Broken springs, blown seals, all problems with heavy pellets.  The ballistics of a pellet that's too heavy for your gun is terrible.  You'd just be lobbing pellets.  Your current gun and the RWS 34,  will probably only shoot 14.3g pellets at 700fps, for 15.6FPE.   A 16g will only do approx. 600fps, for 12.8FPE.    These are "At the Muzzle" measurements...so imagine the losses past 25yards downrange.   A good magnum .177 with heavy pellets can beat that, and shoot much flatter.  They don't change the springs in the gun when you buy a .22 model.   The Same spring gets used for both calibers.
Here it is by the numbers.  Compares .177 vs .22, and LOOK at the FPE data of the heavy("JSB Exact Heavy" & Crosman's "Premier Heavy") in .177 vs. the other .22s.  It is eye opening.
This data is Using the .177/.22  RWS 34:

Anything over 16 grain in a non magnum is in my opinion wasting power that would otherwise be transferred to the target. The best hunting pellet is the one that shoots the most accurately while carrying the most energy. So far, without exception, the pellets that produce the most FPE in my spring guns have also been the most accurate and consistent.

Those heavy .22 pellets are generally used for, and great for PCPs.

Accuracy is King.... I voted for the JSB because all of my guns prefer them over other brands.... However, for your gun I would suggest you try the 14.3 gr. Exact Express or the 15.9 gr. Exact Jumbo.... Regardless, pick the most accurate pellet in YOUR particular gun....

Most of my 22s shoot 14 to 15 grain pellets well. I'm speaking for the springers that I have...shooting on my 20 yard range.  I've had better luck wth the CPD and CPHP also RWS domes and HPs. Awhile back, I tried some Winchester branded pellets and was surprised at the accuracy they gave.

Kev, please be advised that some folks are finding recent tins of JSB pellets to be undersized and thus not shooting well.  I have two tins myself that are just pitiful.  Others are saying the same thing about the Polymags.  A shame, really, because I'd really like to try them.

And x2 on what Mike says about the heavier pellets.  Accuracy and energy and rifle itself are likely to suffer unless you're using a PCP.

I've come to expect good accuracy from the CPHPs, both from personal experience and much of what I've read indicates they work well in a wide variety of rifles.  They shot well in my Beeman RS2 springer but not nearly so well in my Xisico XS46U from Mike Melick.  It really shines with RWS SuperDomes and Super H-points.  Both have the same POI and basically stack at 25yds.

And maybe it's a coincidence, but the little Daisy 880 I got my son for his 7th birthday a couple of months ago likes RWS pellets also.  Different caliber, of course, but I was about ready to give up on this $45 gun when CPHPs, Crosman Destroyers, and 3 different Daisy pellets were spraying all over the place.  Finally got in a couple of RWS tins of the "Diabolo Basic" wadcutters and some Superdomes and now it's making sub-1" groups at 25 yards.

A bit off topic, but if there was a "Most Congeniality Pellet" award, it would have to be the CPHPs and CP domes hands down.  Just seems that more like them than not.  I had bad to spotty, experience with CPHPs before, but something changed...for the better!  I retried them last year, and whatta difference I found in them.  Even if you find that "#1" pellet, it still seems these 2 Crosmans here are a good 2nd/3rd. i use the polymag .22s in my remington NPSS almost exclusively. i have a target "range" in my yard that is 110 feet. the pellets are more accurate than i am. by that i mean if i can keep the gun steady, the groups are maybe 3/4 inch. i like the pellets for their consistent quality and the expansion upon contact. they have no issues taking down invasive chippies and destructive tree rats.

i have no experience with the CPHPs or domes. i likely will give them a try, but my NPSS shoots the polymags so well i haven't felt the need to try them. they are less expensive though, so if they shoot as well they may be a better option.

H&N Barracuda Hunters in .22 are the hardest hitting, most devastating pellet i have used in my Diana Feuerkraft. I have tried all of the top rated pellets and after using these for the first time i purchased 12 tins from PA. Its the only pellet i use whether punching paper or hunting. If your gun likes them, they will do you right.

There is no such thing as a “Best Overall Hunting Pellet“.

First thing you need to find out is what pellet shoots the best out of each gun you own.

That means a lot of pellet testing, but it’s fun to do. To cut cost on pellets, start with the high-end brands first. After you find a “good” pellet, you can always test other cheaper brands (hey more shooting, yea).

Then learn what the gun and pellet combo will do as far as energy and distance. Then work within that range.

As others have said, heavy pellets out of a mid-range spring gun will shorten the life of the spring. However, for me, if only a heavy pellet is accurate out of the gun, I would use that pellet anyway, even at the cost of a shorter spring life. If you can’t hit the target where you want to, nothing else matters.

Do like I did, go to the dark side and don’t worry about pellet weights.

Heavy pellets can be as destructive on a springer and very light ones.  With springers I try to find the middle road as weights are concerned and work my way to a pellet that groups very well.
