I paid my usual monthly visit to my local hunt fish shop to see which Airguns were sitting on the racks. I did a double take when I spotted 3 Patriots sitting side by side. Hmm let's have a closer look...all .177. First Pats I have seen for sale in the gunships so I'm interested cos they're new. The thoughts of most of us owning an English Patriot are long gone, especially as the last one that appeared on Trade me went for around $940. It was .25 but in any cal the burly Brit would have been expensive. So, I think about it and I know they are not favoured in .177 but I reckon with some very heavy pellets it has to be worth $357 .That's cheaper than most of the Chinese magnums here in NZ, one dealer has the Ruger air magnum at $450 ! I reckon she's worth a punt. Any advice from .177 owners gracefully received.
Cheers
Mark.

Dang, $940 for a break barrel? That can get a decent PCP, pump, scope, and perhaps even enough pellets for a while (depending on the first 3), I mean I don't know if any break barrels are worth even close, I mean a nice underlever setup yes, but a break barrel? Not unless there is something really special about it.

I forked out over $900 for my .25 cal English Patriot about 3 or 4 years ago. No regrets over it.. For Americans watching, that would be the buying equivalent of about $500US, not the exact dollar exchange rate, just the pricing you'd exepect to pay here...
Just in my humble opinion,, forget the .177 calibre version at these velocities. It's purely a waste of energy (in the literal sense too). You'd be looking at about 20, maybe 21, ft-lbs maximum at the muzzle in stock standard trim. With a .22 calibre version it'd be bumped up to about 24-26 ft-lbs and in .25 you "might" expect anything up to 26-30 ft-lbs. I'm getting approx 28 out of mine. That's plenty respectable for my liking... Actually, the .22 calibre version may be the best all-round calibre to have, yielding good energy and having a good trajectory but the .25 will knock'em flat. I speak on behalf of any of us .25 cal owners who has scored a hot or two with theirs, I'm sure...

Thanks guys for your replies. GunnerAl, thanks again for your comments I have today cancelled my order for the Patriot in .177. Just toooo many negative comments. If I could have found one in .25 I would have probably gone for it. The only other .25 rifles I have seen in NZ recently have been the Diana 48 and Benjamin Trail NP XL. I had fears of the .177 self destructing due to piston slam and to be honest, I am going to get my Gun Licence and probably get me a 22 as I have a few springers now. I picked up a tin of Barracuda Magnum for the Patriot, just wondering if I could still use them in my LGV? She is full power at 16.9 ft lbs but I'm thinking they might be too heavy? Comments gratefully received guys thanks.

I have the .25 caliber Pat and it is a powerhouse like nothing I have seen! Pushing last chrony session JSB KIngs at just a tad over 37 ft/lbs!!! Insane post-tune numbers for sure. I am hoping when I get range time again and chrony these numbers lower a bit and get this rifle to around 30 ft/lbs. I just think it is running a bit hot!! But not uncontrollable by any means.
