Can your guage port or its position have a significant effect on internal ballistics? I'm talking about in a custom rig where you can do anything you want. Your thoughts?

As long as the hole through it is larger than the inlet of the valve, it shouldn't matter where it is positioned.... If the hole is small, like in a depinger, then you should leave 1 cc between it and the valve for each FPE the gun shoots....

to be honest, think if I were making a rifle where I could choose, would not use a gauge port at all. Are other ways/places to attach a gauge.

Some rifles have them mounted at the very end of the tube or some bottle guns are mounted externally in the bottles neck. I guess my gun if it was me would be at the end of the tube. I personally think it is better to not use a gauge block, unless it is a regulated gun and you want to know how much regulated air is left!
Either way as Bob mentioned is fine.

We got use to gauge block guns and gauges running through the stock’s fore end. So we got use to having a hole through the air tube and the sealing arrangement on both sides of that hole.
So far, that arrangement has been the first place to leak but it’s an easy to understand and manufacture system.
The other choice is to put the gauge on the end of the air tube. This usually means a probe type fill. Not a fan of probe filling devices BUT the end of the tube assemblies perform 3 functions with one unit without adding any extra tube holes (end cap, fill, and gauge).

Guess I'd go with the end cap type gauge, even though I'm not a fan of most fill probes.
If going for the most rugged/simple PCP possible, would probably not have a gauge at all.
Have no complaint about gauges, but have realized that they only do a couple of things for me.
1. The gauge on the fill device works just fine for filling, the gun's gauge either confirms that (by agreeing) or confuses that (by disagreeing).
2. Knowing your shot count and stopping when you reach that limit works fine. Gauge will help if you can't keep count.
3. What a gauge does do is tell you if the air has leaked out.
You'd think #3 would be a great big help...it isn't. Gauge doesn't PREVENT a leak, just gives announces it visually. Telling me it's empty isn't a great big help as I'm going to have to take it apart to fix it. Realize that the gauge could have died and the gun still be full, so gauge or no gauge, will have to check it for air pressure before taking it apart to fix it.
So gauge or no gauge, I'm only going to be sure it's empty until I attempt to shoot it, then inspect it, then CAREFULLY (and safely) vent the tube.
Normal drill:
I'll store the PCP's near the bottom of their sweet spot fill pressure, so my normal first step is to fill the rifle back up to the top of the sweet spot.
Now with a no-gauge rifle, I'll notice it's empty when the rifle starts taking the fill. If it's empty, I'll notice it and stop filling to look for the leak. If I find it, will degas and disassemble to fix the leak.
With a gauge rifle, will notice it reads empty as soon as I pick it up and look at the gauge. Even if I immediately believe the gauge, will still partly fill it in order to try and find the leak. If I find it, will degas the rifle and disassemble it to fix the leak.

You make a good argument for not using a guage. Also, it does steal volume and, therefore, shot count.

I don't have a gauge on my 2260 pcp. I've never missed having one on it.
