CO2 Practical training pistol. Opinions?

Greetings all. I have been lurking here for some time, learned a great deal.
Now I am in the market for a CO2 pistol specificly for training, practice and teaching others handgun basics.
My EDC is my trusty Ruger Sr9c. So in a perfect world, I would like something as close as possible to that in form and function. (compact but not mini semi-auto ambi controls).
If possible on the value side also as I intend possibly purchasing multiple units.
Looking at the Umerex XD for example.
Side note: Got onto airrifles this summer as a way to train for Metallic Silouette. Great way to train at home when time and money are short.
Thanks in advance

I have a Walther CP88. It should be close to your Ruger. It has 8 round clips (revolver style). Can be fired single or double action.

I have a Walther CP99.
In comparing it with a real P99 in the gun shop there are differences; some minor, some major.
Here are some of the "problems" to consider
- Not all controls function as in a real pistol. This can be very important if you are practicing for carry, as you could develop different "muscle memory," which could be fatal. The operation of some pistols are closer to the real thing than others.
- One major item, you cannot practice a reload. These are really revolvers in the shell of a semi-auto, you load a circular clip into the top, not a straight clip into the bottom of the pistol. So all the reload motions will be different from a real pistol.
- You do not have a nice single action trigger for 2nd and subsequent shots. Multiple shots are double action with a long heavy trigger pull, just like a DA revolver. However, the first shot in single action mode is nice, at least on my CP99.
- I have heard different comments about durability; some seem to be OK, others have common problems (aka, a weak spot in the design). You have to research the specific pistols.
However, all said and done, it is a good method to train new shooters in basic gun handling, before going to the real thing. And you can practice this w/o going to a range. Although you still need a safe backstop if you are going to shoot. And you NEED a good backstop, because some people will miss the target completely.
The other option is an "Air Soft" pistol. Again you have to be careful when shopping to get the features you want.
- similar weight
- controls that function similar to the real thing
- repeat fire, for 2nd and subsequent shots, vs a single shot where you have to manually cock the pistol.
ps. next on my list is a 1911 and a CP88 (like Paul's).

I've been looking at this for about a year, but haven't dropped my money. There are two models that I think hit the mark and I found a third possibility. One is a Sig Saur P226 and the other is a 1911. I see there's also a nice Barretta, but I don't know as much about it. I would check youtube for reviews on these air guns. The guns are designed to be functionally equivalent to real firearms. The Sig and the 1911 even strip down the same way. You press the magazine release and it drops just like the real ones. Extra magazines are available for about $30 each. The CO2 is in the magazine so the look and feel of the magazine is realistic. The only thing unrealistic is they generally carry about 20 bbs. You could always load them with a more reasonable number. Get a gun and two extra clips and you're read to practice. The guns look and feel like the real thing.
Sig Sauer P266:

1911 Automatic Colt Pistol:

Baretta 92:

There may be a few more I'm unaware of. Like I say go search for these on youtube and you'll find actual shooting and handling reviews. I intend to pick up one of these but with the two extra clips it's in the $150 range and I haven't had the cash yet.
Here is the review of the Sig Saur P226 that Pyramid sells:

I'm partial to the Sig Saur as I want to practice with a laser mounted and it has the under barrel mount. I think I can practice shooting without jerking the trigger by watching the laser dot on the target through the shot. Perhaps even aim the laser a foot higher than the target so I can watch it better through the shot cycle. The objective is that dot doesn't move through the entire cycle.

Take a look at the Beretta px4 storm. I just bought one and it feels good. Good weight, doesn't feel cheap, fun to shoot and reasonably accurate.

bgmcgee,
Not to rain on your parade, but I've owned that pistol and, IMHO, it has several drawbacks for training. Slide doesn't lock back, revolver in semi-auto shell with unrealistic for training two sided mags. Worst of all, I found them to be very inaccurate, printing several inch groups at close range while never shooting to POA. Just my 2c.

Any good Co2 pistol, is a good practice piece for keeping yourself tuned up, while away from the range. As far as the actions, I don't really think there is any parallel vs a real one. But for practice, no problems.
