Shooting Bench

So, my fighting with my B40 trying to shoot the GTA Benchrest Competition made me realize that my shooting bench needed some serious work. I had been using just my Skil XBench workbench with my sand bag rests. I decided to construct a better top for the table. Off to HomeDepot and I picked up some 1/2 inch plywood and some wood straps. I laid out my design following roughly following this design (minus the legs, since the top will be mounted to my workbench).
Next I sanded everything, concentrating on the edges. I then added a wood strap to help stiffen the thin plywood and it would also be what my workbench would clamp on to hold everything solid. After mounting everything, I noticed that the narrow tail needed some additional support. So I added some strapping there. I used it this morning to shoot some 30 yard targets. After doing so, I think I may want to do some fine tuning.
Anyhow, here are some pics of my setup.

The top is nice a light while still being sturdy. The whole thing is easily portable without much effort at all.

Great job. Add a few spring clips for garden tools on bottom to store the legs and a "hand-hold" slot to carry it and you've got the ultimate in portability with a minimum of space taken up!

I really liked SciGuy's shooting bench, so I decided to make my own. It will be mounted to my B&D Workmate, maybe get it's own legs if I manage to use it enough.
Construction is from materials I had on hand; 3/4" pressure treated plywood, 1x2 and 1x4 pine, and a small section of polycarbonate sheet.
The pressure treated plywood I found in my shed was cut to 17" wide. I wanted a bench a bit wider, so I took the "notch" piece, reversed it, and mounted it adjacent to the forward end of the bench to make it wider. I framed the perimeter of the bench with 1x2 and 1x4 to keep stray pellets and tools from falling off, to increase weight & rigidity, and to form a natural carry handle.
Overall dimensions are 30" long, 22" wide, and about 12 lbs. The narrow end is 12" wide.
I have two 1x4's mounted underneath for the Workmate to clamp to. I also have an "outrigger" 1x4 piece under the wide fore section (behind the clipboard) to stabilize the top should I place it on a flat surface (picnic table, for instance).
There's an extra 1x4 mounted on the top to hold my shooting rest in position - it has 2 sets of holes drilled in it to hold the front legs of the rest. One set is sized to accept the rubber feet on the rest, the other set is snug to the threaded adjusting screws with the rubber feet removed. I bored 2 holes through the wide end to hold screwdrivers, and added a hook for my clipboard.
Lastly, there's a piece of polycarb sheet for the rest's rear adjuster to sit on, so it will glide left-right with just enough stiction to keep it in position.
Details about that modification are here:
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php/topic,4684.0.html
With the top clamped in the Workmate, it's a fairly solid affair. My lightweight camp chair is about the right height. The Caldwell Zero-Max shooting rest is positioned tight to the "notch" side, and fairly close to the center of mass of the bench. There's just enough room on the bench for my shooting bag on the right side, and a few tins of pellets & my tools on the left "wing". Take down is fast and easy. It's not pretty, but it gets it done!
Here's some pix.
You can see some of my other gadgets there too (gun level, rest level, rest adjuster, and my pellet trap).

A while ago (see above post), I made a shooting bench top which I clamped in a Black & Decker Workmate (portable sawhorse with a clamping top work surface). It worked okay, but was a pain to move around as you needed the bench, the Workmate, and a stool.
Recently my wife decided to toss out or donate a welded steel plant stand which we'd had tucked in a corner for years. As I hauled it down to the garage, I was inspired. It was solid, and had a fold-out second tier which was the perfect seat height.
Spend a bit of time replacing the top with pressure-treated 1" plywood, then made corresponding fixing blocks on the underside of the bench-top. Added 3 locking clamps. Voila!
Seat redo is next (plywood, foam padding, cordura cover), but the seated position is perfect. Break-down is quick and easy for storage. Stability is very good, easy to move about.

Finished it off with thick felt dots on the underside of the bench-top to add some tension to the locking clamps.
Replaced the "seat" with pressure treated ply covered with foam and Cordura.
