Title: Nitro Piston Life
Post by: azphil on May 20, 2011, 07:35:12 PM
Anyone out there know the life span of a Nitro Piston powered gun.  As in amount of pellets one can expect before loss of power to the point it needs replaced.  Has anyone had a NP fail at all?  And what would a replacement NP cost?

I have heard of Gas piston guns going 10,000+ shots and still going strong.

i returned 4 crosman titan gp .22's.only 1 lasted to 600 rounds,the other 3 didnt break 300 before a loss of power.
now my 5th titan is a remanufactured model from airguns daily,it has a lil over 1200 rounds still spitting 740 fps with cphp's.

a replacement nitro piston is under $40 from crosman, either the standard trail (b19 size) or the trail xl (b22 size)
both are avaliable from crosman.

ive made 103 yard dove kills with my titan.

Was that dude to the piston failing or the seal?

i would vote piston, never pulled them apart,it was easy to just swap them out.
but after the failure it was way easy to cock....so my money is on the pistin failing.

the first batch of titans made had piston failures,my local walmart had over 12 brought back in 1 mth.
so i opted for a remanufactured one for $99.....worth 3 times that in my opinion.
a .22 reman that can drop doves from long distances.....i was offered $200 for my titan with scope....i turned it down.the guy knew it was a $99 reman too.its hard to get a good titan.

point is not every piston is created equally, you read stories of thousands of shots fired, then stories of less than 200 rounds fired......its a trial and error kinda thing.when you get a good one youll know!
my trail xl hits 940 with cphp's stock......ill never part with that one.
everywhere i read states in the 850 range

Ok cool, I remember you saying you had sent a few back and I always thought it was dude to a nicked seal or something.  I think the refurb is the way to go for most of the chinese crossman stuff and some others as well.

Will the XL piston fit a WFH 22 cal?

im assuming wfh means falcon hunter....if the wfh is a b22 varient....im sure the piston will fit with little mods.
i think the falcon is a b22 varient,id try to locate a picture of the parts breakdown of the falcon, then compare the internals with the trail xl breakdown diagram located at www.crosman.com (http://www.crosman.com),you may have to buy a few parts from the xl....but i think for under $100....you can do it.

I have have over 2600 shots through my Trail NP (17FPE gun), over 1400 through my Phantom that I converted to NP (15 - 16 FPE depending on pellet) and over 1100 through my remanufactured Titan (18FPE gun). No loss of power in any of them. All are extremely nice shooting guns. $26.00 for a gas piston from Crosman when I converted the Phantom.
