breech riser for the BAM 50

I recently bought a BAM 50 in 177 for pesting, but found it was really loud. All my other guns are shrouded so I decided to put one on the BAM 50. I made a .310 tall PVC riser which was tall enough to use a 1-1/8" shroud. I used a 24" .060 wall aluminum tube for the shroud. With just the airstripper and the end cap its already really quiet, and I have yet to put any baffles in the 6" I have between the stripper and the end cap. Looking forward to seeing how quiet it can be with baffles. I also made a depinger and made a brass bolt handle to replace the strange handle that comes on the BAM 50 bolt. Its much nicer to cock with a real bolt handle. Its going to be a fun ongoing project.

Very interesting.
Could you put up a bit more detail for those of us who might like to walk in your steps?

I had made a pvc breech riser for my QB79 and it worked out well, so decided to use pvc again. Remember, the riser does not hold any pressure, its just a spacer. It turns out 1-1/4" sch 40 pvc is a perfect radius for the bam air tube. I split a 7" piece in half on my band saw, then split one of the halves again. a 1/4 of the pipe is more than wide enough for the riser. I glued two of the quarter pieces together with hot blue pvc glue, and sandwiched them between wood scraps in my big vice. End up at .310 tall, perfect for a 1-1/8" shroud. I drilled and dremeled it to fit, and painted it with satin black epoxy paint. I did not take a pic but will post a pic of the one I made for the qb79. The cocking pin was too short, but its a 4mm thread. I bought a long 4mm machine screw at ace, cut it to length, and jb welded a piece of hoppy brass tubing over it, works perfectly. The transfer port was too short, but 5/16 poly tubing from ace hardware fits perfectly in the port recess, worked out really well. I made a shroud base mount, air stripper, and end cap on my trusty south bend. I also changed the hammer spring to the mcmaster carr spring that a gentlemen here on the forum was kind enough to send me. with 10.2 crosman hollow points, I am getting 20 shots in the low 900s. I will post a string when I get the curve tweaked a little more to my liking. This has been lots of fun so far, can`t wait to try some different baffles systems.

You are right John, the riser could be made entirely with hand tool, pvc works pretty easily. If you can`t find someone with a lathe locally, I could probably find time to turn you the air stripper, shroud mount and end cap. I was lucky enough to buy a beautiful 12" south bend lathe for $250 at the auctions when they closed down the Mare Island Shipyards in the San Francisco Bay area years ago. They also had the lathe that was built to turn the Missouri class battleship 16" guns, 60 feet center to center!!

Milo,
Did you make a larger barrel ring to replace the small one that comes on the BAM, or did you just leave the barrel/shroud free floating?

Milo. Any plans to sell some of those bolt handles for those of us who aren't mechanically inclined? I can't stand the swan tail on my BAM!
Good job! Looks great-almost sold mine last year but Yarp brought me back to my senses.
