When the snow is deep like it is now the starlings are allday at the chicken coop .Today i had some time it was cold 5 fresh inches on the ground i knew the shooting would be good . At 8:30 a good women who works at red lobster lets out the chickens and feeds them those biscuts we all have tasted. The yellowbecks cant resist the fuel these biscuts provide and gather quickly. 2 hours of fun using 8.6 grain silverstings sitting in my truck spinning a wheel listening to sports radio the diana P5 worked for it's dinner .I took about 15 shots hitting 11 some flew off in bad shape but i was able retrive a good amount . All shot where 15 to 20 yards all birds on the low tree branches over the coop today a got a little love out in the cold NY winter. Earlier in the day i hammered a nutter off my feeder also in fresh snow with the benji 397 ,6 pumps 17 cal premire dropped him like a stone .And hour later i look he's stiff so i go to the coop when i got home he was gone with no tracks in the fresh snow it seams i was giving even more back to a well feed hawk he must have been taken from above only a drop of blood and his body print remained with some wind blow snow covering it . love winter time

Yup.
Similar here. We've got about 6" of snow and VERY cold temps. Starlings are finally very active. I've also got a hawk. He loves us, clearly, as he's around a lot. Which makes the birds very skittish. Or gone.
BUT, if I leave a dead starling about, he'll come in and get it. Same with sparrows. If he can learn to just leave us for a few hours early, he can get breakfast and if he leaves us in the afternoon, he can get an early dinner too.
Today, I'm up 6 starlings and one sparrow.
When I went out this morning, I dumped 1/4 bag of cat food and I was shooting away. I went out to pick up a bird or two for decoys about 2 hours later and they had eaten ALL the cat food. Bear in mind that I was shooting every time I saw something down there. They must have been sneaking in.
In any case, they spook but they come back. This is great shooting.

When hunting zombie starlings, there are two approaches. The first approach is the "Double-Tap". The alternative is cutting their heads off and putting toothpicks through their hearts.
It's your choice.

Either that or you actually have a cat eating your bait.
I had TWO hawks come by today! One was a MASSIVE thing, probably a redtail. The other one was a fast little guy. I didn't get a good look at him just a blur shooting through trees after the songbirds I'm feeding.

Nice shooting Chris with the Diana pistol Chris!
The Starlings can't resist free food with the cold temps. I missed a chance at a crow today. I looked out the window, before I opened any, and there was a crow inside the bowl finish up the cat food. I have never seen them eat cat food I had put out yesterday, so even the crows will go for anything now with all this snow we got the very cold temps. She hung around for about 2min. until she finished everything (there wasn't much) and took off before I can figure out a way to get a shot off.
Good job and keep at 'em!
