BT65 conversion to 30cal has begun
«
on:
November 07, 2014, 11:54:22 AM »
Purchased a .BT65 in 22cal with the intent to convert to 30cal
Barrel arrived a couple weeks ago and had a bit of free time last night. Managed to get the 1" square aluminum setup true in the lathe. Drilled and reamed for the bolt and barrel ready for the mill.
This will be a single shot to allow boolits up to 0.875" in length. Wanting to shoot pellets at 80fpe and boolits to 125fpe if practicable.
Cheers
Walter
Oh yes barrel is the design of rsterne and SHP in Canada. :-)

Baxter, have had this plan for a long time and so the project continues. The factory 30cal will be sweet but as it is the QE version I doubt we will have access to them here in Canada.
Strike two is the repeater only version. I want a single shot for the flexibility in bullet choices. Have always wanted a po'boys Beaumont 30 and the .BT65 will get me there.
Going to try for a tune at least as good asHatsan gets :-)

.BT65 30cal is assembled and scoped ready for first fire tomorrow!
Sounded perky so hope it shoots strong enough with factory spring. :-) :-)

Thank you Bob,
Shoots the JSB accurate it appears so far.
Need to chronic it asap then start porting it. The .TP sleeve is oem and not sure what stem this is.
Thought I could do away with the rear bolt latch but the internal cocking lever spring pulls the bolt forward.
Loading port is tight so may dress that up as well .
Pleased with that barrel so much we need a name for it! Maybe you and Sean can come up with a designation?

Hey Voltar1, Beautiful Work
!! .........And Bob is right, one heck of a nice stock
I was thinking of buying a 6" cross slide vise for my drill press, so my huge DP could be used as a mill?
Do you this I would be able to get the precision needed to do this kind of work? What (mill) speeds do you work at?
Thanks Voltar1, I think

Looks like you should have a working pressure range from 200 bar down to 130 bar.... Average of the first 15 shots = 789 fps (61 FPE) x 15 = 913 FPE total.... The BT65 is 255 cc (15.5 CI), drop of 60 bar (190-130), so you used 933 CI of air.... Efficiency is 0.98 FPE/CI, pretty good for initial testing....

Thks Bob, not too bad for a 30cal barrel and bolt set on top of 22cal BT65 powerplant.
Going to pull the stem and see what is in there now. Make up a bigger TP sleeve and port match. May see how far the hammer spring can be spaced up. Bring along some of the cast 105 grainers as well.
Be more than happy if it settles in at 15 shots at 850fps ave.

Likely have to slim the stem and drill the seat, plus hog out the top valve port and transfer port.... How big did you go on the barrel port, 7/32" (0.219")?.... That's 75% of boresize, and will flow enough air to reach 1070 fps @ 3000 psi with the 44.8 gr. JSBs in my Disco Double.... Backed down to a proper string at 98 FPE (943 fps) average I get 13 shots with the 49.4 gr. Daystates from 3000 down to 1860 psi with a 250 cc reservoir.... Set up for my 70 gr. boattail I can get 7 shots averaging 118 FPE (872 fps) from 3000 psi down to 2020.... both strings within a 4% ES....

That's big! (80% of bore).... No problem with it damaging the pellet on loading?.... or did you go for an oval barrel port blended into a round transfer port to keep the width of the barrel port down?.... Should breathe like crazy once you attack the valve....

Confirmed at 0.245"
Opened TP to 0.245 and made a Delrin tube TP sleeve.
Left valve body stock so far
Reduced stem by 0.040" and removed sail.
While it was apart improved loading port opening and added the latch open notch for the bolt.
See what the chrony says tomorrow :-)

12 shots from 850 to 974 to 845
195bar to 130bar
Will put the sail back tomorrow as it sounds to be wasting air.
