I could shoot a coke can at 40 yards all day without a scope. But if I want to hit the "o" in coke, I need a scope.
...I got repeatable accuracy only when the scope is set at 6x or lower...at higher magnifications,my every breath and every heartbeat cause the crosshairs to jump and it's difficult to learn how to shoot between them.
I am converting all my scoped springers over to open sights. I can group all day with open sights but just can't shoot a springer with a scope. I might as well not use any scope at all. My PBs and CO2 rifles shoot great with a scope, must be some reason I can't hit the same spot twice with a scoped spring gun. Using the same artillery hold trigger squeeze and objective set right, same pellets. I just shake my head that I can clover leaf the pellets with open sights but can't get a more than 2" group with any of my scoped guns except my .20 Webley and my B3's, and the B3's have your run of the mill Crosman scopes on them. Never did much like scopes anyways, but I should be able to at least get a halfway tight group. I can only attribute it to operator error and will go back to open sights. I can always use the scopes I have on my .22s, as they would be an upgrade to them.
If you really want to give your scope a trial by fire, try this:From a bench or other solid position, at a distance where you can shoot a three shot group that is under an inch, place a piece of cardboard which will be used as a target and place an aiming dot near the lower left hand corner and shoot a 3 shot group. Turn the "up" turret a quarter turn, shoot another 3 shot group, turn the turret "right" a quarter turn, shoot a group, turn the turret "down" a quarter turn, shoot a group and finally turn the turret "left" a quarter turn and see if your first and last groups overlap. The five groups should outline the four corners of a perfect square. (It's called "Shoot the Box" and is used as a test for scopes when they are written up/tested in a shooting magazine.)If your scope can't do this it's ability to be used to: "add 5 clicks for 40 yards, add 12 clicks for 50 yards" etc. might be questionable and is a good reason to just use "hold over" for distant shots. If you try this with a "combo" scope you may come to the conclusion that those turrets are more for looks than function. I'm not saying they're all bad, but when scopes don't stay in focus or hold a zero, there is a reason.
Cole,I have low powered scopes on my springers as they're shot mostly offhand. I have 4 2-7x powered scopes from Barska, Winchester and 1 Hawke Airmax. I have not shot with the Airmax yet but the Barska's and Winchester work great at 2 power. I'll crank to 7 power if I have a rest.Much easier to hold steady at 2x and there's a psychological nervousness to over correct that is gone when you see less wobble.I wish I could find some good springer rated 2 power scopes but all I find are pistol scopes.Taso
Matthew,I don't remember how magnification affects parallax.
Well, now my unscoped guns are accurate. Like I said I shoot better with out one. "special" rings, mounts, secret sause and holds begone. Only the ones that seem to be accurate will have a scope. And of course my PCP/CO2/pump guns.
