I remember back when this all started. I had just been shooting airguns just over a year or so. Of course I had met Bob on the yellow and found that we lived close to each other. We became very close friends and Bob took me under his wing in the tuning business..
Well I had this funny idea of making the air gun community bigger and better..
Bob told me it would be a hard climb to make it work. And he told me that dozens of new upstart forums had started up and failed within a year or two. So we sit down at Mexican willies for several sessions talking about it. At first I was disappointed because of all the issues Bob was laying out on the table. But we finally agreed to do it. I started looking for a forum software on the net and found one that would fit our needs. And it only cost me I think $55.00 for one licence...
It was just an outline of code and I had to put it together along with hundreds of pages of HTML. Quite a job This was the start of the New GTA...
I had just enough experience with building large website communities and knew allot about how it all worked. Bob had all the data he had collected over the years on airguns tuning and all that was associated with air gunning. It was quite a large amount of data that Bob had authored over his years in the airgun tuning. Bob was so gracious to share it all with the new GTA. Without it I think we would of gone down in the first year.
. Formating and converting the documents was a tedious job.
I found a host and would pay them 6 months at a time for hosting us. For years we were on public hosting services, until we got so big that we would crash due to our size on a regular basis. In fact we moved a few times to different public hosts hoping our service would get better. But that was hopeless...
I also might add that I was retired as well as Bob but I was on a fixed income but still could afford the expense out of pocket to pay for everything. Finally in 2009 we had to move to our own server. At this time the price of hosting went up, but we could pay for it, a month at a time which meant I did not have to come up with a large amount of moneys for 3 or 6 months renewals. We started to grow even more and we had to upgrade to a higher level server within a year and half. This is when Bob and I decided that it was time to turn the GTA Forums over to the members. After the second upgrade we had found a member who was as nuts as we were about the future of the GTA...
Of course that was Dez. I cannot say enough about him but I can say that in my lifetime I have never met such a good man. To me that says allot. He has intelligence, integrity, and by all means a man with the highest character that I have ever met outside of Bob....
So now after the third major forum software upgrade and I think the 4th server upgrade we are at this point in the GTA's life. Now the GTA funded entirely by its members and our gracious Vendors. The GTA is now members only administered and moderated by its members.
Bob has graciously stepped down and I am close behind. Dez will carry the fire torch until he will pass it on to the next good man.
I have to say that this has been the most fun in my life time. Meeting some great people and making friends over these years has been a very rewarding experience for me. Reading thousand and thousands of posts from new and happy airgunners over the years is quite rewarding for me. It made this all worth while.

Mr. Bob, what can be said? Without the vision and perseverance you and Mr. Gene shared, the GTA would not exist today. Those early years could not have been pleasant. For those of us who early on excitedly enjoyed the fruits of your labors without participating in the onerous duties of developing the frame and structure of a successful forum, we can only say a humble "Thank you!"
Mr. Bob, you and Mr. Gene ARE the GTA. You will always be a part of airgunning's DNA and especially a very real presence in this forum. So many of us owe you both a great debt of gratitude. From the earliest of documents sharing how to tune that recalcitrant QB78 to Mr. Gene's installation of your fine trigger into my Titan this past weekend, I have witnessed and experienced both of your selfless gifts of time, energy, support and most of all, encouragement. The GTA is all it is today because of the investment of yourselves into it's very existence.
I hope we will always maintain the integrity of your vision for the forum and that all of her membership will always receive the utmost respect from one another. In this way, we hope to honor and continue in your gift to all of airgunning. THANK YOU FOR THE GTA!
Now Dez, it is obvious to all who know you that you truly are the heir apparent for the forum. Your vision for the GTA is not only parallel to those of Mr. Bob and Mr. Gene but is uniquely your own as well. You wade the waters of software glitches, personality conflicts and membership encouragement with ease and humor. That wonderful combination will stand you in good stead in the days to come and the GTA will benefit from your thoughtful leadership. The future is secure with your steady hand on the helm. Congratulations, not only on a job well done but for all your future achievements for the GTA as well!
(Does this mean I have to call you "Mr. Dez" now?!?!

I don't know what more can be said that has not already been said. And very eloquently. But my sincere thanks go out to Mr. Gene, Mr. Bob, Mr. Dez, and all of the staff and membership, for creating the GTA and keeping it THE coolest place on the internet.

Thank you for your service Bob and Gene and now Dave!! I have only been into air guns about 2 years starting out with a Beeman P17, and just graduated to PCP, though if the truth be known I'm still sporting my training wheels. In that two years I've rebuilt a Crosman 140, tuned two springers, a P17, converted a 1377 to a 1322 with 14” barrel with more modifications. I mention that to say this, without the helpful members of not only this site and other forums (the air gun community as a whole is amazing)I have been able to learn so much. The two names that came up the continually are CDT and Gene_SC. I have read and reread your posts, always finding another nugget that I missed or most likely was not ready for yet.
Thank you for your willingness to share the years of experience.

When Gene called me one night last August and asked me if I would like to join the Admin team and later help Dez (Dave) in managing the GTA after he and Bob retire, I was stunned. I could not picture a GTA without Bob or Gene. I have been here for 7 years. To me the GTA is synonymous with Bob & Gene. Not only that, I was full of doubts I could fill such big shoes, and still am. But after just a couple of months working with Dave, and seeing how much time and effort he puts into every aspect of the GTA, how much he cares, and how well he juggles and handles everything and makes it look easy, I knew that with Dave in the pilot seat the GTA had a great chance to grow and continue Bob's and Gene's legacy for many years to come.
Dave's passion and devotion to the GTA parallels that of Bob's and Gene's. To Dave the GTA is a huge part of his life, and I can think of no other person more deserving and suited to continue Bob's work. I have never seen anyone multitask as well as Dave. I remember 1 day in September, Dave was working on getting the Wounded Warrior Organization to present an FWB airgun that the GTA was donating to a wounded warrior. At the same time we had a new vendor requesting a Vendor's Gate on the GTA, and I asked Dave if I should look into it. He kindly said no, he was already handling it. Shortly after that we had some reported posts and PM's were flying, and I said I would look into it, but Dave said he was already on top of it, and communicating with the members and the Moderator involved. It was the end of the month, so I asked Dave if he needed any help with the Raffle for next month. Nope, Dave had already picked the raffle items for the new month, and was typing up the new month's Raffle announcement. Looking to attend to my Admin duties in some way, I noticed there were several new registrations awaiting approval. By the time I looked them over, Dave had already investigated them and approved them. At this time we were getting several PM's from members and vendors offering scopes for the Wounded Warrior FWB rifle, and other items for future Raffles. Minutes later Dave is responding to all of them. OK so I went check the server logs and saw a couple of database tasks had failed to complete. I PM'd Dave again, being that I was still a new Admin and learning, and Dave said he is running the tasks and will back up the database shortly. This was all inside a couple of hours mind you. I started thinking there must be at least 2, possibly 3 people behind that username ezman604! How can one person do all this work and handle so much in such a short time? What is incredible is that Dave does this on a regular basis. His energy and dedication to the GTA appears to be limitless. Dave will always have my admiration and full support as do Bob and Gene. Not a day goes by I am not humbled and thankful I am part of the GTA family.
And thank you Bob (and Gene) for everything you have done for the airgun community and the GTA! You can rest assured you have made the right choice, but I am not telling you anything new
