Dutch Elm Desease would have been spreading in the East at that time.  Bet they got that wood almost free?   I read they used maple right after WW2 because war surplus maple was almost a giveaway.

Just like emerald ash borers wreaked havoc on white ash tress by the thousands in this part of the country. Including mine. That was some fine grained wood too. But the stock on my 160 sure looks like oak with that characteristic structure.

Elm and oak are pretty close in type of grain structure.  Guarantee it's Elm.
