Title: Gamo Silent Stalker IGT .177 opinions
Post by: Jringe1109 on July 19, 2011, 11:26:12 PM
thinking about purchasing this rifle. seem similar to my whisper minus open sights and it has a gas? spring i think... which they call IGT is this just a rebranded crosman nitro piston or gamos own version? also they claim 1100fps with lead...do you think this might be a 16-19fpe rifle? because thats exactly what i want. itll fall perfectly between my whisper and rws350.
thankyou for any and all input

Haven't had the opportunity to shoot one of those, looks interesting though.  I'm sure we must have a couple of members  who've handled that shooter,, maybe they'll chime in.  I used to like the older GAMO's and I have quite a few of them, but personally I'm not as impressed with the newer GAMO rifles.  I looked at the reviews listed on Pyramydair and they didn't appear to be stellar by any means.

The Gamo Silent Stalker IGT has the exact same power plant as your Whisper...:) Don't be fooled by Gamo's Marketing.

Jeremy,

I have the 22 version.  It is a fine shooter with the GRT4 trigger (a must), but had some manufacturing issues that surprised me.

Pros: Very accurate with the right pellets, easy cocking, suppressor does quiet down the muzzle noise and is nice to grab onto during cocking.  Gas ram is smooooth but has a "bark" that is actually louder than the muzzle.  I really like the plastic over-mold on the barrel.  I never worry about where I lean it or what may be on my hands.  Looks good IMO.

Cons:3-9X scope failed to hold windage after about 600 shots (this could be my fault. It dropped to the concrete floor when it rolled of my table during the install).  if you shoot with the open sights you will find that the front sight is too high due to its mounting on top of the suppressor, so the rear sight must be cranked up to the point of falling off.  A taller rear blade would fix this.  This is too bad because the fiber optic sights have a nice picture.

Surprises: When installing the GRT4 trigger I noticed that cocking lever was rubbing on the gas spring casing during the cocking cycle and leaving nice score marks.  Also, I felt that the rear of the ram was not supported accurately(axial slop) so I made a new bushing to center it properly.  I was able to easily fix these issues.

Now with over 1200 pellets it is performing fantastic.  I have read that these IGT Whispers are hold sensitive.  I have found that the artillery hold does not work and will give 3+" groups at 20 yards. For me, the gun prefers a moderate pull to the shoulder with my forehand lightly grasping just in front of the trigger guard.

Here are my pellet Crony numbers

Crosman    Pointed hunting   14.3   695fps   88f - Best accuracy. Tend to thru and thru on game.
JSB Match Diabolo   Jumbo Heavy    18.1   602fps   88f - Great! 1/4 groups at 25 yards
Crosman    Premier Domed   14.3   708fps   88f - 3/4" at 25 yards.  some unexplained flyers
H&N Sport   Baracuda   21.1   560   88 - Lousy accuracy

"The Gamo Silent Stalker IGT has the exact same power plant as your Whisper..."
Whispers have conventional spring powerplants? No.  Silent Stalker is definitely an Gamo Gas Ram.

FWIW, I don't think that Gamo has a gas piston.  Gene will know for sure (and correct me if I'm wrong, no problem) but I can remember PA offering the Air Venturi conversion for the Gamo power plants like the CFX, being just about all "mid magnum" Gamo's.  Maybe they offer one now.  Well they should, with Crosman nibbling at their market share.

Have not seen what factory Gamo gas rams from factory look like apart. But I did a couple conversions on the ones with new triggers. End results were fantastic. The last one was a Socom Elite. Here are some pics depicting parts association. This was the gun also that CDT and I based the new GRT-IV  on.

I would go with the benjamin trail np all weather in .22 call. I'm actually fixing to get one. Unless you prefer open sights then I would go with the nitro piston.

they are actually listing it on the gamo website as having a gasram... i doubt they would let themselves open for lawsuits if they were going to still use a spring...

Yes , the IGT has a gas system and not a spring . Basicly same thing as the nitro piston but gamo's version.  Also say's a "sat" trigger. Not sure what that is? Means smooth action trigger.

Hi all. New to your forum. I've got the Whisper IGT .177. It definitely is a Gas Ram and not a spring. I like the gas ram technology but I'm not sure Gamo has got it quite right yet. The gun has a lot of recoil. The speeds they report are correct. Using ordinary Gamo 7.56 grain pellets it shoots between 900-950 fps. But it was very difficult to get good groupings. I want to try a heavier pellet. The trigger fails to impress. If you use those Gamo PBA pellets. It's incredibly loud and the pellets reach almost 1200 ft/s.

Would a heavier pellet be better?

I really don't think Gamo makes a Gas Rammed Piston break barrel rifle. Pyarmyd has been putting the gas rams in them. They are using Crosman gas rams...:) Besided they install them @@@ backwards..:) I think they could use some help on there installation proceedures...:)

Besides Pyaramyd has not done any changes to the stock spring pistons. There guns are disigned around springs and not nitro pistons..

They have hopped on the band wagon to cature the the gas ram folks that like only synthetic stocks...:)  By the way all but a couple of Gamo rifles are the same power plants they been using for 20 years. Nothing has changed except the stocks. Those stocks are costin folks a fortune..:)

And I won't  get into the new plastic fantastic triggers they are using now...

Gamo IGT's are gas rams.  I got mine from Midway so that excludes PA modifying the gun :)
The ram is marked GAMO but it is most likely made by some gas ram manufacturer as an OEM part.

Can't argue the "plastic fantastic" LOL other than it really it #$$%!

I don't see a spring here?

I'm going with Gene's interpretation.....   :)

The picture was of Bob and my R&D on the new GRT 4 trigger with my spring to ram conversion on that Gamo. I made parts for the ram modification and I also included my GRS Bushin kit with the build as well. This was Bob first GRT 4 trigger before refinement. It worked out great and the gentleman I did the conversion for was very happy with the outcome.

If you notice the ram is installed in the proper direction and now reversed like Pyramyd Air does them.

Gene,

PA may install in reverse to add some mass to the piston; The Gamo piston is very light. I assume the housing of the ram is heaver than the piston rod.  Just a theory.  The Gamo factory ram setup is installed the conventional (Gene proper) direction.

This gas ram was not meant to work in that direction...:) If you think about it the gas tube is taking all the beating.. It was easier and less costly to install the gas rams in reverse. Crosman on the other hand changed the piston design on there gas ram break barrels to a heavier piston and put a dimple in bottom of piston for shaft to seat in.

Just remember all these New Gamo gas ram's come directly from Pyramyd Air. The idea is to convert the Gamo's as cheaply as possible.

Sorry but that is the raw facts.

I recently purchased the 0.177 "Whisper" variant of this from a retail store (not PA).  I can again confirm that it is gas-ram "from the factory".

I had it apart the other day to install Charlie's GRT-4G and took a few snaps of the ram itself.  It has the following markings:

AZOLGAS
AFJ 70.E51 C=108
667668
97/23/CE a t.3.3
2010

Azolgas is, not surprisingly, a Spanish manufacturer of nitrogen gas rams.  The AFJ series is described here:

http://www.azolgas.es/pdf/01_series_micro.pdf (http://www.azolgas.es/pdf/01_series_micro.pdf)

And, interestingly, is listed as "Obsoleto/Phasing Out"

sounds like Gamo bought a bunch of of pistons on a close out special.
