Title: RWS 34 scope mount resolution
Post by: Brooks P on December 06, 2010, 01:15:43 PM
As I posted yesterday, on Saturday my new 34 arrived and I soon discovered that the the UTG Scope Mount Base (DN034) doesn’t fit properly on the rifle. The new 34 has a longer (6 inches) scope rail than previous RWS models and this causes the UTG Scope Mount Base to be too far forward.

I called PA this morning and their customer service couldn’t have been nicer, or better. They are shipping me a different scope mount, the RWS Lock Down 1-Pc Mount w/1" Rings, 11mm dovetail, with barrel droop compensation. There is a newer model with four screws per ring cap, but apparently it is too new, therefore it hasn’t reached our shores yet.

The woman I spoke to, and I’m really sorry I didn’t get her name, was very polite and offered me several options. She also said there was no need to return the UTG unit or the Hawk rings as the fault was theirs not mine. One of the options we discussed was filing off the foot on the UTG unit so that the unit can be positioned farther back on the rail. The new rail has four stop pin holes, two of which go all the way through the rail.

The rifle is virtually useless to me without my scope being mounted, so I need some help resolving this issue.

great customer service can put one at ease.i struggled with my rws 52 and 48 models before i added the utg mounts.that was missing link.then i was able achieve suprime accuracy with the utg mounts.although the 52 is better suited for bench rest shooting.I'd like to own a 34 someday.

Brooks, there is the possibility that your gun may not have enough droop to need the compensating mount.  I would try it with just a pair of rings that have a scope stop pin so see if it will zero.

Do you have any 4 screw 11mm mounts?

What scope did you buy?

The only rings I have are Weaver not 11mm. The scope is a Bushnell 5-15x40 Elite 3200. PA is sending the new scope mount at no cost to me so the only thing I have to lose is some time. If it turns out that the compensation isn't needed then I'll look at purchasing either 11mm rings or another Weaver adaptor without compensation.

On my RWS 52 I am using the BKL 260-d7 with a Hawke airmax scope and that mount is Awesome.

 Hi Brooks
I used a hacksaw and cut that "foot" off the front of my utg drooper mount for a rws 350, i then used that mount on tech force and bam AG's,, since it's a freeby, that might get you up and shooting till your new one comes in. Just make sure it doesn't start to slip and mar up your base.  J

Robert,

I’m not going to do anything more until the replacement mount (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/rws-lock-down-1-pc-mount-w-1-rings-11mm-dovetail-barrel-droop?a=2406 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/rws-lock-down-1-pc-mount-w-1-rings-11mm-dovetail-barrel-droop?a=2406)) arrives and I can try it out. There is always the possibility that the rifle doesn’t suffer from barrel-droop and a compensator mount isn’t required, in which case I’ll have to order something else. One of the BLK mounts is a possibility as is the Leapers Accushot. I have a set of Hawk match rings that are very nice although they are for a Weaver rail. I also wouldn’t mind one tiny bit if the scope was a bit lower, but I’m not real anxious to spend any more money right now on a scope mount.

JonnyReb,

That is one of the possibilities that I discussed with PA this morning, and the woman indicated that they have done that very same modification, more than once. Paul even discusses that modification in the video for the Beeman RX2. I was going to have another look at the UTG mount tomorrow and see how the pin-stop/pin-hole matchup. The new rail besides being longer now has 4 holes, two of which go all the way through the rail. My other concern is that the pin looks to be rather skimpy – the diameter definitely looks smaller than the hole

Anybody know what that screw on the back of the rail is for? I know it isn’t a stop, but it must serve some purpose.

The replacement has shipped and Fedex shows an estimated delivery date of the 10th, just in time for the weekend.

Brooks,

P.A. "strongly recommends" 4 screw rings on RWS springers of this power level.

https://www.pyramydair.com/product/utg-scope-mount-base-fits-rws-diana-34-36-38-45-with-to5-trigger?a=2298 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/utg-scope-mount-base-fits-rws-diana-34-36-38-45-with-to5-trigger?a=2298)

Keep a close eye on your scope tube and make sure it's not shifting in the rings.  Those are only two screw rings on the mount they are sending you.

Just trying to look out for ya ;D,

Larry

I ran into the longer scope base on my 470 also. Though it was just the one model. I had to turn the leapers base around then drill out one of the stop pin holes to get the stop pin to lock into the base and prevent scope creap. Even wiht the leapers base cranked down and stop pin cranked in and everything lock tighted I still had scope creap. I wonder If UTG knows they are longer bases now. If they made thier mount 1 in longer it would fit perfectly.

Well for me anyway it is obvious that RWS is going to a longer scope base and one with deeper pin-stop holes. One way to increase profits is to use the same part on as many different products as possible, so I think this new rail will be appearing on all the models, right along with the To6 trigger.

UTG needs to make their base an inch longer, and it certainly wouldn’t hurt to make the stop-pin(s) larger to match the holes on the new scope rail. The hole just happens to be the same diameter as the threaded part of the pin. The question that comes to mind is whether or not UTG has picked up on the fact that Diana is changing to a new scope mount; probably in response to complaints that the existing pin-stop holes were too shallow and ineffective.

The second question that comes to mind is whether Diana has addressed the barrel-droop, because if they have there would be no need for a compensator rail. I know there are ring mounts that are adjustable for height and with the new deeper pin-holes adjustable rings would solve the barrel-droop problem and allow scopes to be mounted closer to the rifle. I just don’t know if anyone makes adjustable rings with pin-stops that would be suitable for AGs; sure would be a cleaner look.

Yep, I’m fully aware of that recommendation and mentioned it when I was talking to PA on Monday. Diana has changed the mount and all of Diana’s mounts now have four-screw ring caps, but they haven’t reached our shores yet. The Leapers Accushot 1-Pc mount (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/leapers-accushot-1-pc-mount-w-1-rings-3-8-dovetail?a=805 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/leapers-accushot-1-pc-mount-w-1-rings-3-8-dovetail?a=805)) has four-screw caps and was suggested as a possibility if it turns out that compensation isn’t needed – there is no barrel-droop compensation built into the Accushot mount. The problem is that no one seems to know if the new 34 Classic suffers from barrel-droop; I suspect that barrel-droop was not something that Diana addressed with this new model. I suspect that the new To6 trigger, new “classic” stock with its hard butt-plate, longer length and straight clean look, which closely resembles the 34P stock’s silhouette, and the new scope rail pretty much encompasses the changes.

I have a mounting solution that will work for RWS guns. See the web site: airscopes.com
