The Trail NP XL has more power(F.P.S.) than than the Trail NP is all.

do you think that the NP gets 950fps are anything close to it?

There is more difference than just the powerplant. The Trail XL is a bigger, longer and heavier gun that takes a lot more effort to cock.

The Trail XL will shoot a 14.3 grain pellet around 900 FPS while the Trail NP will shoot the same pellet around 780 FPS.

Airgun manufacturers claim pellet speeds using light weight non-lead pellets and is an advertising gimmick. That's why none can match the advertised speed on the box using lead pellets.

Quite true, and I am very disappointed to see that Crosman, who really should know better, is following that trend.
I like to call the inflated velocity figures "Gamofied."
;)

Your right Perry I guess I should of mentioned the longer action on the XL's. Now I'm not sure, but I believe the NP's are the same just the XL has more run at launching the pellet, why XL need's no compressor to open it(anyone know for sure?).But yeah the real world F.P.S. on my XL in .22 is 890 with 14.3gr CPHP's for alittle over 25 F.P.E.

I am new to airguns and appreciate the helps in this section. I live at high altitudes and was wondering if that is an issue with the NP XL 22 cal. I did read a post indicating drop but it appeared that may have been due to piston failure. Does anyone shoot this model at 8000ft? I have narrowed down my purchase to this model as I have pests to get rid of and need the umph to penetrate lose dirt(1").

I have read alot about that too Ragman, it Does seem that it come's into play once you reach a certain elavation? An I can see as how it would really. BUT over all I'd like to say Welcome to the GTA!!!   P.S. If you get the XL in .22 I think you will be safe, mine at 4800ft shoot's 14.3gr pellet's at 890fps for 25fpe? I think if I was you I'd go with a heavy pellet in the 18gr or so for better penatration on that dirt hill.

Welcome to GTA Ragman, very nice to have you with us.  I don't live at your elevation but I do have a .22 XL and use it for hunting small game and woodchucks that range in size from smaller young ones all the way up to 15 pounders and my rifle, using the 18.1 grain JSB domes takes em down cleanly and quickly.  It's a great hunting rifle.  My rifle is still bone stock, except for the GRT trigger of course, and it shot great right from the box.  Nice and consistent FPS #'s and a nice smooth firing cycle. I have no experience regarding shooting in high altitudes but I'm sure other members will chime in and help you out.  Again, Welcome and I'll be looking forward to your future posts.

Welcome Ragman,

Someone posted info on the old GTA that stated there is about a 2% drop in velocity per 1000ft increase in elevation.

Back when we first got them. I compared my XL's fps with numbers Jeff posted using the same pellets. I'm 1000 ft higher than Jeff and my Xl was very close to 2% slower than Jeff's XL.

I just got back from a funeral on Long Island. I had hoped to bring the gun along and test it at close to sea level at my brothers house (south of Jeff), but too little time. Maybe next trip ???

Paul.

I just got the XL .22 version 2 weeks ago.  ON the box it says 1100 fps with non lead pellet.  One the back or side of the box, it says 950 with a lead pellet.   I'm still trying to figure mine out (shooting accuracy),  does take effort to cock, and does have power.

There is a feature on Pyramyd Air's website I have found helpful.  If your interested  air guns they sell, you can do a side by side comparison of those air guns.  Just a thought.

Thank You for all the input guys, I will go to Pyramid and compare side by side. When I make the purchase I will try to post back the velocity at the high elevation as an FYI. I need to shoot moles at about 7700 ft at a cabin. It is located in  a small town and a rim fire is too dangerous and loud for the neighbors.
