Title: Gamo SAT IGT upgrade using BoneCollector Bull Whisper
Post by: GTA-Airgunner on April 13, 2012, 09:05:44 AM
Hello folks.

Recently I got my hands on a .22 cal Bone Collector Bull Whisper (BCBW for short).  I found the gun to be pretty loud and have an extremely sharp recoil.  So much so that I snapped the reticules on 2 scopes and sheared off the stop pins of two mounts.  I tried the BKL 11mm to Weaver heavy duty rail and that would not stay put.

I was in and out of the gun several times trying to figure out other issues as well... grinding, scraping, during cocking, etc.   After a good bit of work and a few turns with my Dremel tool, I got the action working pretty well, but the sharpness of the recoil was still an issue and any scope / mount was just not going to cut it.

(after talking to other BCBW owners, my experience seems to be the exception rather than the norm.  I think that is important to mention)

Rather than call it a total loss, I took a good look at my CFX and noticed that the trigger was identical in form as well as the rest of the internal components.  So I did a switch-a-roo, moving the SAT & and Gas ram to the CFX and the CFX trigger and spring components to the BCBW.

What I got was something very interesting.  The BCBW now shot more quietly, with a much more gentle recoil, was really accurate, and more importantly, the scope was staying put.

The CFX has a smooth as glass cocking stroke and a much nicer trigger, it acts like a totally new gun.  The loudness and the recoil increased significantly in the CFX, but it is much heavier than the BCBW and I believe it will handle things better.. Time will tell.

In the end, I went from a BCBW that was not usable, to a BCBW that was not only usable but a joy to shoot, and an improved (at least seemingly improved... I will do some chrony and shot tests today), CFX.

One thing is for sure, the new SAT trigger group, if we can get them as parts, can just drop in without any modifications to some of the gamo guns that have the plastic trigger.

I'll share more as I learn more.

Cheers

I wonder if the gas ram in yours was a bit stronger than it should have been. Curious to hear how your CFX shoots now.

BCBW to CFX heart transplant update..

The BCBW with a spring is doing really well.  Averaging about a 10fps spread across 10 shots and coming in around 710 to 715 with 14.6 grn pellets.  It’s doing better than expected.

The CFX on the other hand is not faring as well.  While the velocity and accuracy remains fairly the same as before, maybe slightly better with the new SAT trigger, the recoil is still too much for even the gamo riser and heavy duty mount.  It has bent both to pieces in under 100 or so shots. It seems to be “holding” for now but I’m pretty sure it’s just a matter of time before the scope falls off the gun.  I’ll let you know when / if that happens.

The Velocity with the gas ram is very similar as to the spring with the gun generating 11.98 to 12.5 foot pounds at best.  There is less vibration and I find the gun easier to shoot with the ram vs the spring.

The CFX barrel (same as with the cfr I tested) is very strange to me.. It likes some pellets and really hates others.  The same gun will shoot the 8.13 grain redfire pellets (one of the most accurate in my cfx) at over 810 fps, and the 8.4 grain field target trophies at 705..? obviously there is just something about the head size of the pellet or some other minute variation that is causing some pellets to get a better fit in the CFX.  The RWS "super" pellets seem consistently good options with the Super H Points averaging over 900 fps and getting decent groups (.25 +/- CTC) at 10 yards. I hope to post some shot card photos if I get some time.

I think the CFX with the SAT (or of course the GRT IV) and a spring may be the best way to go.   This gas ram is way too loud and produces way too much recoil.    I’m getting a 109.6 from the CFX with the gas ram.  The BCBW was a 106.. I guess the bull barrel suppressor helped some on the BCBW afterall.

In any case.. I hope this has been helpful at some level, if not at least interesting.

Cheers.

Rick, in the CFX, I have good fits from the JSB Exacts, and generally pretty good results from the Ole' CPHPs,...and of course the Domes.  May wanna try them in yours.  I'm really curious of the damage Rick....  Is your CFX an older, or newer model? I use a 2005 model.
