going to have the poor accuracy problems caused by paint in the barrel from the factory?
Has anybody bought one that was accurate right out of the box?
I'd sorta like to have one before squirrel season gets here, but really ain't looking
forward to having to "fix" any problems with a new gun.
Is there any other gun that "measures" up to the 397 or 397 in the multi-pumper catagory?
Thanks
Ray

With paint stripper, the fix will take 5 minutes.

Power wise they are KING and they had a rep for quality as I was growing up and I never ran across one that was not accurate back then.
I still like them but would rather build my own now days and I honestly never liked the barrel being attached to the pump tube...

As I said in another post.. I got my 392 from Amazon. It was advertised for $143 and free shipping. When I put it my cart and went to pay for it, I was given a $20 discount. I promptly used $18 of it to bump up to 2 day priority shipping. That brought the gun to my door for $141. Ordered it on Wednesday, got it on Monday. And Friday was the 4th of July. Took it out of the box (which was beat a little from shipping) and looked it over real good. It looked real good. I did notice there was a little wobble between the stock and the action. There is a bolt on the stock screw that acts as a lock nut. It must have red locktight in it because I couldn't adjust it with a regular wrench. Not wanting to mess with it at the time, I put a strip of the fuzzy side of velcro in the bed and put the gun together. A couple drops of oil in the piston and 15 shots later, I was consistantly hitting dimes at 15 yards and if I do my part with my 57 year old eyes, I can do it at 25 to 35 yrds. Open sights. I never looked for paint. Probably couldn't see paint if there was any and never felt like I needed to. Since then, I've gotten some secret sauce from Timmy Mac and added a few drops. As long as this gun shoots like it does, the only thing I'm going to do with it is SHOOT IT !!! (whenever Betty Lou lets me, I bought it for her)

Just got a new Blue Streak. Tried a little to get the paint out of the barrel, no luck. Then I just shot it.
It shoots really good - open sights at 12 yards and I can hit about a quarter - and I don't have good eyes for open sights.
Trigger is not bad. Lot's of bad raps on these guns, but I am very happy with it. I have also owned HW and RWS - the 392 and 397 guns are still worth buying.

I have collected seven pump up air rifles made by Crosman. All of the Benjamin 22 caliber and Sheridan 20 caliber model pump up air rifles made by Crosman that I have had paint in the barrels at the muzzle end. I shoot my pump up air rifles indoors off a benchrest at target 10 meters distance . With a few of the rifles I have tried various brands and weight pellets before and after cleaning out the paint. Take time to clean the paint out of the barrels.

My 2008 392 had paint in the barrel. It patterned like a shotgun at 10 yards. I cleaned it out with Carb and Choke cleaner, a .22 barrel mop and Q-tips. Then polished the crown. Then it shot 5 shots under a dime at 20 to 25 yards. Did a lot of other mods to it to increase power and reduce pump effort and improve the trigger. After all that it was pretty nice rifle. Except for the aluminum valve issues of the Benjies of the 2005 to 2010 time frame.
Then I bought a vintage Sheridan Blue streak. Gave away the 392 and never looked back. My mid '60's 'Dan is at least twice the quality rifle the Benji was. Since then I've picked up a late '40's Crosman 102 and mid '50's Crosman 140. Both are far better rifles than a new Benji.
If you want a .22 Benji get one made either before Crosman bought them out or just right after. Before 2000 anyway.

My 397's and 392 are all Benjamin made. They are all excellent shooters. They hit the same spot consistently. I had to look after reading this post and a few others. I'd guess there might be paint at the end of the barrel, but it does seems to have no effect on my accuracy. I'm keeping them as is. They are about 15 or so years old.
I would have sent it back if not accurate. They were all new, with one being a re manufactured one. All are keepers.
