This nutter looks like he got bit by Mike Tyson!

I woke up a tad late this morning (12:30 PM) and as I wiped the tired out of my eyes I walked to the window in my room that looks out into the backyard.  I peered through the blinds and to my amazement there was a nutter foraging through the grass.  I grabbed the Evanix Rainstorm .22 and loaded up 5 18grn JSB's in the mag.  I opened the door to the back porch and slowly made my way on the the deck.  I knelt at the ledge and rested the gun on the railing as I acquired the little guy in my scope.  I found him standing straight up just asking for it.  Without checking to see where the AO was set to I placed the first mil-dot low on his head and pulled the trigger.  I saw the pellet impact behind him and my heart sank.  I quickly loaded another pellet because the nutter hadn't begun to run away yet.  He took a few quick bounds towards the brush behind him and paused.  I quickly pulled the trigger again fearing that he would get away.  I missed again.  This time he didn't move at all and I loaded another pellets. (thank God for side-lever actions  )  I decided to check the AO and saw that it was at 40 yards.  For some reason I thought he was further out and I got it in my head that the Leapers 4-16 I have on the Rainstorm is a tad messed up on the range estimation side of things.  So anyway knowing the gun is sighted in for 30 yards I chose to just put the crosshairs on his head and pull the trigger.  This time there was no denying where I was aiming.  I heard that distinctive thwack that sounds like the pellet is hitting a 2x4 and watched the nutter just slump over.  I guess when you get hit in the head with 35-40 FPE you don't get up.  Hit him in the ear at a little over 40 yards and it made what Mike Tyson did to Evander Holyfield look civil  . To boot he actually had a nut in his mouth.  Last pic is a view from the deck, the red circle is where the nutter was.

a dead nutters a good nutter i just hope your shooting in a safe direction with something other then them buildings behind your target. remember to be shure of your target and beyond

Thanks guys. Yea I make sure that the area is clear or people and most objects. I also do my best to shoot at an angle where if I miss there is a large tree behind my target.

I was thinking about that too. Besides being a very good shot/nice kill, there may be some cause for concern. Because you're shooting at a pretty flat angle (no way to get up higher?), the risk of a pass-through (and that thing will pass through I'd bet) ricocheting is probably a bit higher than you'd like. Especially in really cold weather when soft ground becomes rock hard. Good news is, that's some pretty good range there before you hit anything. Bad news is, you've got a powerful gun.

I might suggest that you build a few "back stops" and "kill zones". Maybe pick a good angle and build a leaning barrier or two out of natural wood (tree branches and the like)? It also might be time for a PT wood fence back there.

If you shoot back there much at all, I'd definitely build a "lean to" backstop (that will angle errant pellets down into the ground) that you can move around the yard to allow you a  to more safely take starlings and sparrows (if that's your bag) at bait stations.

Actually I was up about 20 feet shooting down. I was shooting off the deck.  Generally when I target shoot I use a homemade trap backed up to one of
The trees just in case. I am always very sure that there is no one around that could potentially be harmed by a ricochet or a pass through.

I will try building some bait stations with backstops though. I like that idea. Thanks for your input and concern
