Silly New Experience - Umarex Steel Storm
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:53:50 PM »
I am not generally a loud person. I don't tend to shoot animals -- though I know why you would -- and I could give you several reasons. I pretty much HATE CO2 guns...

I just got a $50 Umarex Steel Storm. why? It was $50. it looked like a repeater. I thought it would make me laugh. And I could use up this jar of 6000 BBs someone got for me...

After reading that you wouldn't get more than a few shots out of this I dove in and bought 24 CO2 12g cylanders. The guy I bought them from sent me 24 16g cartridges. I bought 40 12 g and sold the 24  16g cartridges for their cost, the cost of the gun and the cost of the 40 12 g cartridges... the gun is free.

When I finally had the gun and the cartridges, I loaded in the CO2 and then the BBs... and I didn't expect much. I filled the reservoire (about 300 BBs), pulled the lever for the 30 fill magazine, pulled the trigger... Not only did it seem to go where I pointed, but with some authority. I switched to 6-shot burst... and took 2 - 3 - 4 -5. ... Shooting out my window, into the snow, expecting very little from this gun, I was mightily surprised. I started laughing. It was ripping BBs out like a machine-gun. It was putting them where I pointed. This was WAY more than I expected for $50.

but I'd read you don't get many shots. So I pulled the trigger. Loaded the magazine. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. loaded the magazine. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger.  loaded the reservoire. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger. Pulled the trigger.

I shot at least 400 BBs. I was getting exhausted. I was 200 past where I thought I'd be done. I saw Police go by and I thought they were there to stop me... Neighbors got into their cars and I wondered if it was pizza, or 1968...

If you get the chance and feel like silly, this is a great gun. Shoot up paper plates, rows of plastic armies, Styrofoam whatevers...

This may be the funniest gun I have bought. Nothing else i have does this... and with the low-cost CO2 charges ($1 a fill), I see this one having many scare-creature incarnations!

I got one from Airguns daily

It is kind of stupid fun. I have been
just using 2-12 grams in it, but I do
have a coil hose and an adapter for it.
Will put it on a 20 oz bottle once it
warms up.

Didn't think I would like it, but it is fun.
A few friends have shot it, they usually
shoot one magazine in the 6 shot burst,
mode, put it on single shot for a shot or two,
then it's back on 6 shot burst from then
on out.

I have been very tempted to get this fun gun ever since I watched Paul Capello's review a while ago.
Reminds me of the old magazine ads for the M19A back in the 1980s.
A guy discussing those ads - http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-65974.html
Someone selling the M19A itself - http://www.gunsamerica.com/976982985/Non-Guns/Air-Rifles-Pistols/CO2-Pistol/Larc_M_19_A.htm
I was thinking of going for the more expensive EBOS instead, but you just may have talked me into the Steel Storm for some "stupid fun" now.
;)

The EBOS is much more gun for the money velocity wise, the drawbacks are it does
use the airsource bottles and it takes batteries.
The Steel Storm is pretty weak. I have quite a bit of room outside to shoot,
I was "lobbing BB's" they took a very high arch and
landed maybe 200 feet away, but that was on burst mode.
But for walking cans around the yard, it is pretty fun.

Thanks for the extra information, Bill.
That pretty well confirms what I thought about the differences between the two.
The Drozd Blackbird looks like the best BB submachine gun, but it's also just too expensive for me to consider.
If I spend that kind of money, I'll get a quality spring or gas ram rifle instead.

I got the Storm on Airguns Daily and it was $50 or $55... It is a lot more gun than I thought I paid for. I was expecting like 3 bursts and then some kind of cracking noise and that would be the end of it. It completely surpassed any expectations. It may not be very powerful, but I didn't get it to mow down bears... It can rip paper, plink cans, ... 200 feet!?!?! I don't get to shoot most of my powerful guns that far!

The Storm is a great gun to have fun with.  People are amazed when I let them shoot it.  They never dreamed that a BB gun could be so much fun & shoot so fast.  I figure it sounds awhole lot like a very fast air-nailer gun in the neighborhood.  I mounted mine with the Walther PS-55 on the top rail and a small laser on the bottom rail.  The whole thing looks very cool and like it means trouble.  If I'd had this thing when I was a kid and have'n war games with my friends; it would had been me against all them.  The downside in war is just how fast can you pour almost 300 BBs in the gun for a refill, load 30 in the mag, cock it, and replace 2 CO2's before they find you?  And I don't think they'll have any mercy on you when they do find you.  lol  Those where the days, just glad nobody ever lost an eye.  Speaking of which; if you shoot this at something hard, you'll think that someone is shooting back at you just as fast.  Eye protection is the key word here friends.
The gun is cheap to buy, but expensive to shoot.  I've found that after shooting a full load of about 300 BBs that the CO2 has been depleted enough to make it time to change them as well.  But if you want fun, here it is.  It looks real, but feels cheap in the hand.  It's heavy, but accurate for what it is.  Wonder if you can hunt with it?  Soda cans are abit to tame for it.  Tree rats, maybe to much.  Just a fun gun to play around with I think. :D

Blackbird is the gun if you want to go serious and modify your gun. The best ones are running 2000 rpm full auto at 900+ fps using HPA :)
Viking Mk2 .177 (by Huub)
BSA Scorpion SE .177 - bench rest
Gamo Dynamax .22 - pest control
FWB300SU - match
Drozd Blackbird HPA - 1200 rpm full auto fun gun / meat grinder
AR1000 .177 - powerful
Gamo Hunter Sport .177 - disappointing
Crosman Nightstalker HPA - project
Evanix AR6 carbine/pistol
Webley Tempest + few other airguns

Yeah, this thing rocks.  I bought one each for my two young sons last year (8 & 10).
They love 'em, and when we go to the range I always talk them into letting 'dad' have at least one go with them.
As to the lack of power...they're $75 b.b. guns for crying out loud.
And really...an HK MP5 9mm submachine gun is seldom used at 200ft.

After much review and comments I too bought a Umarex Steel Storm.   The only thing holding back my grin is my ears.

This gun shoots straight and never jams.  I have a target at 5 meters and it will hit an American Dollar in single burst groupings.  The automatic mode reminds me of the old midway days at the county fairs with the Thompson machine gun and shooting out the star and arguing with the 'Carney' your results.
