The noise level "will" go up in a pistol or revolver bobster without question from what I have found, even the Aguila made "Colibri"(hummingbird) that crowpopper mentioned above that only are primed with Eley primer mix are much louder out of my old S&W 34 "kit" revolver than out of a rifle, but still great fun an are just a gentle pop instead of a bang, can be shoot in a basement without ear protection(well my old deaf ear's can). If you want to "really" go quite in a rifle give them a try, rather expensive but accurate out to about 20yds.

Jay, you should never fire any of the primer mix only cartridges in a rifle length barrel, as Aquila strongly warns against so doing on their labeling.
There is too much chance of a bullet not exiting the bore, then the next shot wrecking the gun and possibly you in the process.
Don't do it.
That's why CCI uses just enough powder in their CB and BB loads to ensure the bullet makes its way fully out of any length barrel.

Ok so that iphone app is total junk.

I bought a cheap meter and here are some revised figures Which are WAY more accurate.  The meter seems to be good as it's pretty steady with ambient noise and doesn't jump around like that iphone app.:

Beeman RS 2 sring airgun 72.9 db, 73.9

Crosman 2240 CO2 airgun pistol 78.5

CB long  89.1, 89.5

CB short 88.0

P.S. Where can you buy that Aguila ammo?

Thank's OP, I use the faster one's(believe like 550/750fps, can't remember???) an have never had a problem, but only used a few in a rifle, alway's been out of a revolver, but I am glad you pointed that out as the only english on my old brick is a small safety warning about wearing glasses an such (an I'm lucky to even read english!!!). Again THANK's, better to lean toward's safety.

Bobster, you can buy Aquila at lots of locations.
The only brick-and-mortar store in my area that I have seen with it is the Gander Mountain in Greenwood, IN and the other in Castleton, IN.
Naturally, they should have it available online as well, but (for some reason) I can't locate the link on their site.

I have a marlin bolt action tube feed.  I sling the CCI CB Shorts through it all the time.  Super quiet.  Much quieter than my son's Discovery prior to putting the Muzzle brake on it.  They are in the 650 to 750 range depending on the bullet.  There is quite a bit of variance, but they are a nice quiet option.

CCI claims that the new Quiet-22 ammo is 68db at the ear.  Sounds a little too good to be true.  But my testing which showed around 89 db for the cb long etc. had the sound meter placed in front of and to the side of the gun so I didn't measure at my ears.  Maybe I'll try it with the meter "at my ears" and see what the difference is tomorrow.  Basically I'm trying to determine f there is a noticeable difference noise-wise between the cb long and the new quiet-22 which apparently is really hard to find as it's so new.

One review I saw where the guy used the new quiet-22 at the range he said it was like shooting the cb long only more accurate. That makes sense as it is a 40 grain bullet for the quiet-22 vs. 29 grain for the cb long.  I can't find anywhere to buy the quiet-22 yet so it will be a while probably before testing that.

Back in the 90's, Al Miller used to write the rimfire section of Rifle Magazine.  He and his buddies discovered that the then-new reissue of .22 WRF ammo shot extremely well in almost every .22 magnum rifle.  Even those which had been ho-hum performers turned in admirable results.  Al started referring to it as ".22 Special" because it was much like shooting .44 Specials in .44 Magnums.

Another Al Miller tip - If you have a Ruger Single Six or similar revolver, try some Remington Yellow Jackets and similar high speed ammo.  Al was shooting some up one day after experiencing miserable results in his rifle, only to be delighted that it shrunk the handgun's groups appreciably.  Kind of like pellet guns, no?

I'm not sure what all the brouhaha with this CCI ammo is all about.  For one thing, the blurb I saw said it was using Short or CB bullets but those are 29 grain, not 40.  And this was from CCI no less.  For another, you can do about as well with Shorts in a long barrel.  Some of the older guns with really long tubes are almost silent.  A little lighter bullet but that's all you are giving up.  (Will have to clean more often to prevent a fouling ring ahead of the short case, however, that's after a LOT of rounds.)  Try CCI Pistol Shorts, too.

Let me toss in the old caveat about the low powered rounds such as CB caps.  Pay attention to each shot to be sure it has cleared the barrel.  Some of these combinations are dead quiet and, like centerfire squib or gallery loads, are just making it out of the bore.
Even though they seem anemic, a stuck bullet followed by a second will ring the barrel.

Update: tested the cblongs in the mark III pistol with 6" barrel.  The sound was 10 db higher than the rifle (longest barrel 10/22) at 98 db.  Since the scale is logarithmic, a 10db increase equates to roughly twice as loud.  Big difference between the pistol and rifle.  This is measured about 10 feet away in front of and to the side of the barrel.  I haven't tested "at the ears" yet.

I also got a chance to shoot the cblongs outside.  Shooting outside there was a night and day difference between the cblongs and regular velocity ammo in the pistol.  The cblongs sounded like an airgun and the regular ones hurt your ears without hearing protection.
