Born and raised in Hawaii the language is a combination of different ethnic groups stemming back to the old plantation days. Not so much now in Honolulu but more in the outer islands. When growing up visitors struggled to understand the locals. My speech in the later years had to improve to conform to the mainland ways. Just to fit in the mainstream work force.
My point is that I have noticed even in the airgun world there are a lot of abbreviated words and slangs where the experienced air gunners can converse. But also have notice that a lot of the new air gunners wanting to learn get answers to there questions abbreviated or words that have nick names. Which there are times I think they are totally bewildered on the answers received.

There is also a glossary and a library that they are often pointed to that really does a good job at showing what the different terms mean. Also, they can ask

Hey, bruddah, I know what you mean. They use slang and then you got to go find the pooka they hide the definitions in. Ono to tell you straight up the first time.
Well, that's about as far as I can get in Pidgin-Hawaiin. But I do agree with you one hundred per cent. Sometimes air gunners reply in airgunese because they've thought it for so long. Other times I think it's a case of trying to show off how much they know or that they are part of the "in crowd".
So, where in the islands do you originally hail from and where might you be now?

I won't say what is in a "Loco Moco"
...but you and I know what it is,AWESOME! I miss Hawaii, its been way to long.
I know what you mean, the slang in the AG world is hard to figure at the beginning, but I'm a relative "noob" myself. If people hang out with us a couple of months, they'll get it too.
AHHHhhh
I miss Hawaii

Brought up in Kalihi a district part of Honolulu Oahu. Living in Kailua now on the other side of the Koolau mountian range. Miss the old days. Much less hectic and now over crowded. Thanks for asking

I really liked Kailua when I visited there. Waimea (sp?) Valley, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific". Was really laid back. I can't imagine what it must be like in the islands these days. About the time I left ('73), the Japanese were buying everything up and the strip at Waikiki ended at the Royal Hawaiian. Now the Japanese are broke, sold off their holdings and the strip is all the way to Diamond Head. I occasionally watch Hawaii Five-O and, to be honest, hardly recognize anything except for the old building with King Kamehameha out front. (For anyone wondering what I'm talking about, my Hawaii was Magnum PI's.)
When I was stationed there at Pearl, Ford Island, I took some pictures of the the harbor and showed them to a neighbor when I returned home on leave. He was there in WWII as a welder and worked on the damaged ships. He could actually pick out cranes, etc, that were in service at the time. I thought, boy, I wonder what the islands were like when HE was there,
thirty years ago
? ? ? LOL, it's been even longer for me! Hopefully, the wahinis haven't changed. (And I'm sure there are still some big mommas in mumu's, too. Remember the big gal in the buckskins in the WigWam commercials? "Come on down to my place, honey. We got a lot in store for you!")

Redfeather you sure are bringing back good old memeories. You probably wouldn't recognize a lot of Honolulu. But Waimea in Kauai should almost be the same as when you had visited it. Kauai is trying to stay country. Had worked there for a year in the mid 70's. Then about a year ago for another year of work. The place is a little more populated with a added large shopping center but basically the same. So if you ever come to visit make time to go to the outer islands.

Boy, it's been too long it seems. I was getting Kauai mixed up Kailua. Had to bring up a map. Did that bring back memories. I see they haven't connected the dots around the point up past Makaha. I guess the "road out" sign is still in place? (When you rented a car on Oahu, they used to make you sign an insurance waiver if you tried to take the road all the way around, there being no real road.) Tell me, is the Pearl City Tavern still there, and, if so, do they still have the infamous Monkey Bar? (Hey, I was Navy enlisted. Whaddya want? We saw the highlights and lowlights.)
Oh, yeah. I was looking at my high school class website and saw that one of my old friends had passed away, last address Haleiwa. Fellow's name was Buzz Boe and he was, apparently, really into the surf scene there. Came into the house after surfing one of his favorite spots, had a blood vessel burst in his head and died. His wife said that about seventy surfers formed a large circle and scattered his ashes offshore. Was a real shame he and I didn't connect if and when we were both there. Being the islands are a small, tight place, mayhaps you heard of him?

Kauai, was my favorite of the islands I visited. The "secret" waterfall up the Wahalua (SP?)river was beautiful and won't soon forget it. And Red when I was on Kauai (LOL) the road did not connect. But up north on the west side it was awesome. I believe it was "Na Paulie" coast...just past the PGA golf course Princeville. We are in the works to go back sooner then later I hope....Bart

The don't call if the Flower Island for nothing. You could smell them on the breeze, driving down the highway. I'm not sure which road we were following, but it ended, literally, at a beach. If you were not paying attention, you would need an Aqua Car. I still remember coming to a stop and seeing all these people splashing in the surf and catching some rays. I don't recall that hidden waterfall but, once while taking the road to Hanama Bay on Maui, we came around a corner to see a young gal sliding down into a waterfall, just like in the movies. (And, if you've ever driven that road, welcome to the Survivor's Club! Worst danged thing I ever experienced, and with a rear brake overheating and locking up, too.)
BTW, when I was in the Islands, I don't think any of the smaller ones had contiguous roads. Believe that was intentional.

Sorry Redfeather about your friend Buzz. Never made his acquaintance. The Pearl City tavern has been gone for about fifteen years. Very sad it was an island favorite eating place. Bart and yourself probably have seen more of the state than I have as well as most visitors.
JFYI
Kauai is the Garden Isle
Wailua River
Napili Coast
Haunama Bay is on Ohau
Those Hawaiian name can be a doozie and don't ask me what they mean.
Thanks for taking interest in our little state

Guess it has been too long. My brain cells, like the PC Tavern, are missing in action. (Wonder what ever happened to those monkeys? It was always fun to sit at the bar and watch the tourists' shocked expressions at the imps' complete lack of morals and discretion, not to paint too fine a picture.)
Yes, I meant Hana Bay, on Maui. Here's a nice travel package for the adventurous. A full day trip. You will need a day, believe me. We had a rental car and a map which said the drive time was a couple of hours. Reviewing the scale, it didn't look that far. How could it take so long? When the gal with the camper atop the pickup speed by us at about sixty mph, we soon figured out why. Volcanic rock to one side and about six feet of shoulder on the other. We got there Sunday afternoon, having taken approximately two and a half times the suggested travel time. The only gas station was closed and we didn't have enough gas (or guts) to make it back at night. Went to some kind of ranch resort to get a room. They looked at us, three young GI's, consulted their registry and said we could have a room - $125 (1972 dollars, no less) - but that's
EACH
. Looking around at all the older women with nice young tennis partners and similarly aged gents with cute staffers, we got the idea they didn't want us. Imagine that! So we went on down to the beach, swam a bit and then slept on the sand. (I did not know until I brought up this link that it was a black sand beach. Of course, it
was
night.) Had a terrible, listless sleep. Someone was offshore, signaling with a flashlight. We figured it was smugglers in for a shipment of Maui Wowee, a very popular "souvenir" at the time. Finally comes the dawn. I think we headed further up to Seven Sacred Pools, then turned around and gassed up, the station finally being open. As we were leaving, an old local guy literally jumped in front of our car, waving his hands frantically and talking too fast for us to understand him. He came around to the driver's window and slowed enough to tell us that we should go see their famous beach before we left. We told him thanks, but we had just spent the night there. Man, did that guy start cussing us out in I don't know what! Touchy touchy. Maybe some day I will go back and see that beach by daylight, but it's gonna be by boat, baby! I ain't tempting Fate twice. Check it out. (And that's the
GOOD
stretch!)

Redfeather sorry you had a bad experience in Hana. There are a few places even today the locals want to keep it local. Never been to Hana but hear the roads are still narrow. I guess the people of Hana really don't want a lot of visitor traffic. May be one of those places where you can still leave your doors unlocked at night.
Watching the news the other night where the people of the island of Molokai were protesting a tour boat making a stop there. That is a laid back island not to may jobs but isolated enough where you can live off the land.
So if anyone was to visit watch out for off the beaten track so to say. There was a mainland college student attending the University of Hawaii. Decided to camp on the beach in Waianae Oahu. Waianae has nice beaches but some of the people are territorial. He got beat up by one fella and died. Waianae is one of the areas with a lot of violent history. A lot of nice people live there but takes just a few bad bannanas to spoil the bunch. So if you want to visit it not a perfect place. I guess it would show the bad side in some episodes of Hawaii 5/0.
Here a little trivia. Waianae drinks more Budweiser per capita than any where else in the US.

There were a lot of rough edges back when I was on Oahu, as well. A few blocks off of Waikiki was a section we called the "Jungle". Some tough characters lived there. But I also had shipmates who rented a place in the Jungle during off-crew and, once they settled in, they were treated like anyone else. And you could drive a short ways from Hotel Street and see some depressed areas the tourists never got to. It's the same everywhere you go. And it isn't always the civilians. I had a run-in with the Hawaii Five-O and I can tell you, it was not fun. No love lost between them and the military personnel, believe me.
I guess they have to drink Bud now that Primo is extinct. (And a good thing, too. I usually like local brews but that one was B-A-D. We were once given an ice cold case after pushing a stuck station wagon out of the sand at North Shore. As soon as they left, we wondered what to do with it? Ended up beneath the sand. Yeah, it was
that
bad. And this from a bunch of swabbies.)
OMG! Just Googled Primo and
it's back!!!
When did that happen? I thought they tore down the brewery to build a stadium or something? How does it taste? (Be honest, now. No native pride, etc.) Well, at least they have a nice wahini with that old VW. Too bad we didn't have that with
our
Primo, Bruddah. (Probably her father - no, make that grandpa we pushed out of the sand.
)
PS - The two best brews in the Islands back then were Olympia ("Oly", "It's the water") and, believe it or not, Schlitz. For some unknown reason, the Schlitz ingredients (same as used stateside - excuse me, Lower 48) brewed completely different in HI. Back home you wouldn't wash your dog with it.
PPS - Since you were born and raised there and, I take it, been around Oahu forever, perhaps you chanced to hear these two lunatics at Davy Jones Locker or the Crows Nest?
Shaka!

The wife and I aren't drinkers but maybe if we get our homely butts out of the house we will check out those two lunatics.
As for Primo beer as the story goes it was really a fine brew. The demand was so great they had rushed the brewing process. That's were it went down hill. Not sure if the new brew is any good.
As for the shaka sign JFYI. Way back there was a Filipino car dealer named Lippy Espinda that hosted a TV show that showed old movies. He would end every show with ''Shaka''. Man that was way back.
