Another Stock refinished: The Titan Denim.
« on: January 27, 2012, 09:27:47 PM »
Well here she is.... Another stock off the work bench.
The Limited Edition "Titan Denim". (I'm not doing another one any time soon)
This one was really fun. started working with some new types of stain and finish.
A lot of re-contouring of the stock as well.
Learned some things along the way too.

Enjoy.
Pete.

I used MinWax Express Color . Emerald Green . Takes about five coats to get an even finish. Then sand it off with 360grt, till you get the shade you want.  Then clear coat it. I think I wrote up the process in that post.

I like to use alcohol based dyes.  I used to do all my 10/22's that way.  You have a little more control over the color depth and it's more forgiving if you do it right.  It's nice that, after you're done and you don't like the color, you cna bleach it and start from scratch.  People thought I had a ton of 10/22's because every match it looked like I had a different rifle.

That's cool.  The water base stains are ok and you strip can them off very easily. The problem is the water based clear coats are difficult to work with at best . The drying elements that are used cause it to set very fast . I finally got the idea to add some 91% Rubbing Alcohol to it and that made a ton of difference. It's not my favorite . I wish I had a spray setup. $$$$$$$$$

I don't like the water based clears...you're right!  Very difficult to work with.  I haven't had any issues staining in water based then using poly to finish...so long as I give it adequate time to dry, that is...

Thanks.

Solvent based Poly over water based stain is ok. Give it about week to dry out.  Try adding the alcohol to the water base poly. You may discover something.  I  still don't like it . but  I would used it again for a quick project due to the short drying time.

I think that blue looks very nice.  That grain stands out. Impressive work there and it turned out very well.  Good job.  Like the holes in the bottom of the stock under the thumbhole area...For some reason they just look good there...Like removing weight eh?...Thinking of doing my Titan in a med to slightly darker grey stain.  Then poly.  Haven't seen anything like that yet.  Don't want it too dark as I want the grain to pop and not be muted by the stain.  Then maybe some selective sanding to highlight different areas.  While I'm at it I'm going to recontour the thumb-hole/grip area.  It's way too fat right there and could use some serious gouging to make it truly comfortable.  If I screw it up I'll just get some truck bed liner paint and do it in black!...Keep doing them
