I use stack-on gun safes and an ammo safe also from stack-on.
I keep those in a locked closet.
I have 3 teenage daughters. I keep everything away and hidden from prying eyes.
But if someone wanted to get them from me, there concern wouldn't be where they are or how to break the locks. It would be how not to get eaten by zeus.
Not many come over that have any idea about my guns, all know about the dog.

Can't justify a full fledged gun safe as insurance would cover fire or theft loss,

Ol'DeadEye,

Not sure who you are insured with, but when I checked into coverage of my meager collection of firearms, the company required a 'rider' which would include the "make, model, caliber, serial number, original cost, current value, etc." of each gun to be covered.

That was something that was not acceptable to me. I bought a safe!

I currently use a locking gun cabinet with the glass display door. I have been thinking of replacing the glass with some type of wood panel, stained to match. My kids know firearm safety, and respect the cabinet but I kind of like the idea of keeping them out of sight. You know the old saying, out of sight out of mind.

gun closet, no gun cabinet, breakins are at an all time high in my area and i think a gun cabinet just screams "break in and steal me".  About the only way id have one would be as a decoy, keep my cheapest guns in there and hope in a break in they would grab those and go without looking for more

Don, maybe think about at least putting the registered guns on the rider, since they're on a registery already.

Also, that safe wan't protect them from fire or water.  And before everyone chimes in with, "It's a fire safe.."  Every safe is rated for heat.  So, if it's a 15 minute, 2,000 degree safe, that means your guns were cooking for what..1,800 degrees.  Ok, so the safe did its job, but would you expect your stocks not to warp at those temperatures, escpecially with the moisture from the water used to extinguish the fire?  I guess what I'm getting at is that guns can get damaged in a safe, without getting physically damaged and that could get hard to prove, even if they are insured.  Aside from heirlooms, I'd rather the guns just burn up and get replaced.  IDK, I've struggled with the fire safe thing for years...

I saw a shop in Texas, where the fire lasted 15 minutes and hardly anything was burned.  However, the moisture from the water ruined every gun they had in stock.  They posted pictures and the metal rusted within hours.  It was total loss of inventory.

Not that some of these AGs aren't expensive, but that was my thinking as well.  Just put my AGs in the cabinet.

Don,

Why don't you want to give your insurance company the information?
Concerned about the federal gestapo getting your information?
Airguns are considered as toys to them, at least for now.
You do HAVE a complete inventory of your possessions, don't you?
Have you ever contemplated what would be requested by the insurance company if your house burned to the ground?
I couldn't itemize 5% of my homes contents from memory.
So I'm recording a complete inventory of everything I own, starting with sporting goods, appliances and major furniture items.
I keep it in a database I built with MySQL and a web based interface on a free web hosting site.  It is password protected
and backed up to several free data storage servers monthly  or whenever I do data input of any degree.
I also print a list from the database and keep it handy just in case ...
I can tell in a quick minute how much I've spent on any category by running a quick query.
Here's a sample record:

I have a list in Excel, but I like the SQL program.   Is that a program you can share?

I have my guns bike chained to a "gun rack" through the triggers.  However, I need to get a safer option.  My wife has put the true hold on spending, so I might just go around looking for the ghetto gun safe (used upright freezer) that I'll just add a padlock and latch to.

this day and time i wouldn't want my guns on display for any pizza delivery person or anyone for that matter to see. i do however use a couple of old gun racks in the basement out of the kids reach. my basement is off limits via a child safe gate and they are only down there with mine or my wife's presence. same with friends associates etc. i generally put the more expensive ags in the safe.   few thieves would know that the bb gun is worth more than the pb but no reason taking chances. ;D

I'm still struggling with this.  The room I have in mind, is out of sight to delivery guys, etc.  Only guests are invited into that room.  My wife and I discussed this and when kids come over, and as the kids get older, that will NOT be their gameroom.  It's for poker, movie watching, etc., but for the adults and I would be installing a lock at the bottom of the door.

Hmm...
