Crosman M417 Reveiw

After putting in my order for the Crosman M417 it arrived the 29th double boxed. After removing the outer box I carefully opened up the box containing the M417. Once opened I looked over the entire airgun which to my disappointment had no protecting foam around it at all. There was one small piece of foam laying on the cocking knob and that's it. I pulled the M417 from the box and looked it over from butt to barrel and thankfully found no damage. I continued to check out the workmanship of the M417 and am very impressed. Since it's plastic the mold seems were finished off nicely and I found no blemish's that you can get from plastic molds. After a careful inspection of the M417 I moved out to the shop to clean the barrel and perform some chrony testing and also to see how the pumper performs. The pellet loading clip seemed to perform well as I loaded the pellets and the pellet used for testing would be the Crosman Premier domed. Cocking the M417 was a nice solid feel as I pulled back the bolt and slid the pellet chamber into the port which has a nice solid hook up between each pellet chamber. I read some reviews on the pumping action and to me it had a nice pumping action and not as flimsy with more of a solid then hollow sound when the pumping arm engages the bottom of the tube. After running several dozen pellet's through the chrony average came to 570fps with the 7.9g Crosman Premier domed pellet. The number was higher then I expected but am pleased with the result's. I wiped down the M417 and looked it over again out in the shop under the light's and must say I'm still impressed with the look of this pumper which for the price is more then I expected. It was time to mount a scope and start to get an idea of what this pumper liked as far as pellet. After mounting a Sun Optics 3-9X40 AO scope I grabbed several brands of pellets and went to work sighting the M417 in. I wanted to keep the range within the M417's ability to take small critter game so the target was moved in to 15yrds. I finally got the lead on paper and after tightening the group's up and finding a pellet that the M417 loved
I put up one of my Sharpie drawn nutter targets and went to work on putting out some killing group's. The pellet of choice ending up being the Gamo Hunter domed 7.56g and it was laying down a tight group at 15yrds and ten shot's. I was impressed again with a pumper that I had pulled out of the box the other night and after mounting a scope and sighting in it's showing some impressive accuracy. I spent part of the day running more lead through and the Gamo Hunter pellet is the pellet of choice for her and I've used them before for small critter game with super result's. Now the M417 will get cleaned up and prepped for camo and a TKO brake on order along with some other accessories. In my opinion the M417 is more bang for the buck in the look of the finished product and it's performance out of the box. The pumper is light but still has a nice solid feel to it but can be improved with a slightly longer adjustable butt. I did not do any BB testing since this will be a pellet only pumper but after finding the right pellet really shined. I expect great things from this little pumper and am very pleased with the M417. Also I did not mount the open sights so I can not give you an opinion on that. Ed

I ran the pellet of choice across the chrony which is the Gamo Hunter 7.56 and the avg. came to 578fps. I want to add some internal mod's to kick up the punch some to give her more hit em where it hurts power. Ed

Very nice review buddy. Your rifle is shooting just about like mine, except mine doesn't like the same pellet. They are neat little shooters aren't they ? I love mine. Can't wait to see how you dress your up

Hey Ed, would a TKO be a simple, easy slip on mod? Also, what did you have in mind for a power mod? Would a flat top valve increase velocitiy by maybe 40 fps?
