Coyote Hunting in the morning!
« on: September 03, 2010, 08:23:13 PM »
I'm going hunting in the morning with a new guy.  He has a place with coyotes all over it so I hope we'll be sucessful.  Also, since I don't have to carry too much hunting stuff, I'm going to carry the camera gear to get it on tape.  I've got all the cameras on chargers so they'll be able to hang through the entire hunt.

I have too many invitations to hunt lately!  If that is a problem.  The thing is it is usually folks wanting to go with me and I'm having to find the places to go.  This week I get to go and relax.

Last week I got to go BOBCAT hunting for two days.  Didn't see the cat, but I found where it eats.  Feathers are EVERYWHERE near its lair.  The landowner called me and said they saw two coyotes there the day after I left!  The predators are eating their chickens and TWRA gave us special permission to take them out out of season.

The next day I got to go coyote hunting with a new guy and THEN squirrel hunting before Church on Sunday!  I was one tired dude, which is probalby why I got sick this week.

This new guy has some groundhog grounds so I may put the 350 in the car too!  :)

You KNOW  I will!  This guy thinks he heard a dozen here which usually means half or less than half of that.  No matter I just want to put some HeviShot Dead Coyote into one of them!

I was grabbing an air gun for groundhogs and noticed that the reticle on the 350 is canted! Also I'm not sure the range I sighted in at since I was messing with it the other day.  I do know that the trusty TF 89 is dead on at 20 yards, so I'm taking it with me.

I'll look at the 350 tomorrow when it is light again.  I got so busy shooting the B21 today that I should have checked the gun I was really going to take with me.

I met Shannon Duncan at Exit 4 off of I81 near White Pine, TN.  Shannon has a land clearing business around that area.  He had been clearing land in this subdivision and found LOTS of coyote signs.  It was actually almost unbelievable how much sign was around there.  Scat, trails, pounded down areas that looked like someone had tied up dogs there, it was incredible.

The bad thing was it was a difficult land to call.  After we conferred we decided to try the edge of a bushhog trail he had made.  He put the decoy up on the hill and his Foxpro call.  Shannon was setup at the edge of the trail.  I was covering the decoy and a big outcropping of ragweed off to Shannon's left.

It wasn't two minutes when the first one appeared coming through some brush.  Shannon quickly dispatched it with his Remington 1187, shooting 3.5" HeviShot Dead Coyote.  I never saw the critter!  However, I grabbed my RuffiDawg coyote call and started blowing KiYis (Coyote distress) for a few seconds  until he switched the FoxPro over to the same sound.

Not even a minute later the SECOND one came running towards his downed buddy.  Shannon was in perfect position and #2 went down!

He turned and asked me "Are we done yet?" and I said "no".  He turned up the Coyote Distress a little bit more and a THIRD ONE came to the call!  He looked to be a big dominant male as he was bouncing in and barking at us!  Shannon hesitated because he thought it was a pet!  I fired the first shot, and then two more, followed by at least one more from Shannon and the coyote got away!  We fired over $20 worth of ammo and had nothing to show for it on the third.

We looked through the brush for over an hour and never found it.  I felt sure that we hit it a couple of times, but the last shots we took were from over 40 yards.  No matter we had great success! I've never seen three at once so I was so excited just from the adventure.

Ive had that happen before...the whole mistake one as a pet. It was a solid black coyote about 5 yards max away from me prancing. It had just been shot at over the hill. By the time it registered to me it was gone. I was turkey hunting a cow pastuer

Wow, you shot 3 coyotes with your buddy.  That's excellent day Randy!  Love the pics!  Too bad about the big one.
I thought they were foxes at first :)  Were they juveniles?  The one on the left (my left) looks just slightly bigger than the fox I got.  I wonder if that big one was one of their parents.

Great story and pics!  I can't wait for your next coyote outting!  What kind of call did you guys use?  I want to go out and get the same one.  Drawing them in 30-40yds is really good.

Hey no problem I posted it on an air gun forum.  Just some of these guys have known me for awhile so they know if I'm going coyote hunting it is with a powder burner.

We were using a Foxpro Electronic Call.  About the least expensive Foxpro is the Spitfire and it is about $200.   Shannon has one of the top of the line Foxpro calls!  All he hunts are coyotes and groundhogs.  I think the one he has costs about $600!

Furseeker turned me on to varmintal.com. I made the El Cheapo call on there. I seriously doubt it works as well as his Foxpro. :)

Here is the one he uses:  http://www.gofoxpro.com/products/digital_calls/product_gx7.php

Wow, that's some call you friend has!  So he normally plays wounded/in-distress rabbit sounds?

If I could, that's all I would hunt too.  Groundhogs and coyotes :)

What does he do with all the coyotes he kills?  Do people eat them?  I guess it 'd be like eating a dog?  :D  Is there a market for the skins?

Great post and pics Randy.  That's quite a  hunt you had.  I've never hunted coyote but from your account of the hunt and the pics it sure looks like it makes for exciting hunting.

Some folks do skin them and sell the hides.  However, the hides this far south aren't all that good until they get into full winter coat.  I've never heard of anyone eating them.  For one they STINK! :P

I'm not sure what Shannon does with his. My friend Jake puts them in the death pile where he puts his dead calves.  If it had a nice pelt, I would skin it and save the pelt.  Otherwise I'd take it out to the place where the buzzard roost and feed them breakfast.  That is where the raccoon carcasses go after I skin them since I don't eat them.

As far as calls, all you really need is a hand call.  There are hundreds of them!  A hand call, full camo, and whatever weapon you have. Literally if you own a rifle or shotgun you can use it for coyotes.  I'm not sure of the laws in your state, but you could also take them with a PCP air rifle.  It is illegal to shoot coyotes with airguns in TN.  Our local club is trying to change the laws in our state.

New York has a pretty good sized predator hunting community!  The Bark at the Moon club I think is up in that area.
